Title: My Linux Deflowering!
Post by: Tachyon on May 28, 2007, 02:42:35 PM
I'm using Linux for the very first time and it seems pretty cool, I'm using a SLAX LIveCD. Linux itself doesn't seem too hard to use (though I have no idea how Trevelyn manages to use LiveCDs for everything), Konsole looks pretty cool, I messed around with Telnet a bit in DOS but didn't do a lot, off I go to Google to find something cool to do with it...

Congrats!  Do you intend to completely stop using Windows?

I just started running Ubuntu on one of my laptops a few weeks ago.  I really like it so far even though I'm a newb and don't know how to do much.

Indeed I do, I was just running this LIveCD to get used to it, but now that I see I have access to my old harddrive (piles of files I THOUGHT I'd deleted, already learning loads about that) I may just keep running this. At present, I'm using a broken laptop, but I have all the parts save a case and harddrives for a new box that I will install real Slackware on if all goes well.

no no honey, i didnt have hard drives back then.  I do now.  I use ubuntu on almost all of the machines now, I used slackware for about 3 years.  I have tried them all and Ubuntu is actualkly the best one so far i have used,  It is a derivation of Debian.  It has an absolutely awsome package manager.. PM me you guys if you need help or have any questions!!  wow congrats man..

The best part about linux is how 1337 you feel when using it. All package managers are easy to use when you get the hang of it. Does ubuntu have that nice transparent terminal like knoppix?

I love how everyone fawns over all the Debian derivatives but Debian itself keeps declining in popularity.

Meh.

Are you freaking kidding me? You bring up a thread two months old to say yum?

i assume you don't know what yum is then...

You're missing the point. You posted a one word reply to a two month old thread. It'd be one thing if you expounded on how you liked or disliked Yellow dog Updater Modified but you just simply posted yum. I'm just saying, if you're going to post in an old thread then at least have the decency to add something to it other than one word.

My hatred of you and soulja boy could fuel the fire of a million suns. Soulja Boy is not hip hop. It's a minstrel show that is an affront to black people. I'm sure Marting Luther King Jr. is rolling in his grave right now.

Linux is awesome. If you like Slax you should install Slackware itself. It's not very user friendly for just getting started with Linux, but it's a great distro. "Vector" is also good and pretty easy to get used to being new to Linux and it's a Slackware based distro. 8)

You can set transparency on pretty much anything on X-Windows with any distro. E-term is a good terminal emulator for that option IMO.

I find this conversation relevant.

I got a bunch of flashdrives from a wholesaler (they messed up an order at work) and decided I was going to make one a bootable device, so I put Damn Small on it. I don't think I've ever seen my parent's PII run so smooth, even if it did take forever and a few minutes to boot.

Yeah that's the best part. I have an old P2 running freeBSD and it runs very smooth even with X windows. And my main computer is only a P3 (600mhz, 512ram) running slackware12.0 and it runs great. I use fluxbox as a windows manager and it makes it much faster because it's so minimal.

fluxbox rules.  I've been using that or blackbox forever now.  Every now and then I try our Enlightenment DR17 but those pesky desktop icons piss me off.
