Ask me something music related
« on: June 26, 2007, 12:56:24 PM »
Have you ever wondered how overtones work, or why a piano sounds so much better than a synth piano?
Have you ever wondered what jackass thought of the violin?
Ever wonder, what the fuck is a hurdy-gurdy and why do metal bands like them so much?

Ask away! I'm not just going to answer classical-music related questions, but I probably know them best.

And, as a music student with a huge ego: If you have a question I don't know the answer to, I'll probably lie my ass off.

And.... GO!

Why does Nickelback sell so many records? Is it merely off good looks?

There is no such thing as a good upbeat Madonna song.

I was wondering the same thing. They have a fairly large fanbase consisting of aging rockers. When they play at Summerfest or Ozzfest up here, the people getting into it the most are the ones who are really there for the Crue, ya know?

Also, they're bland enough to appeal to those people that don't like "Metal" but have lyrics that are offensive/racy/raunchy enough to also appeal to the fagged-out rockers of the MTV generation, along with their parents (see above argument).

And, as a distant third - good looks.

how exactly does one get fagged-out on music?

I mean I like Queen, but not that much.

What makes a guitar riff 'classic'?

1) It has a strong sense of melody, particularly a catchy melody
2) The song built upon the riff is also solid
3) The guitarist looks really cool when playing said riff
4) It's execution either requires a higher amount of technical skill (or it at least sounds like it does)

Yes. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are myself, possibly Trevelyn, possibly yourself, and legend(something). Just check out the thread "So what bands do you like?" and cntrl+f for Slayer. I'm sure a few will pop up

Fagged-out, in my use, refers to a look. It's all those dirty-hair, shitty clothed doper-looking mtv listeners that either do or desperately want to look like they do heavy drugs.

I love queen too. I just always forget about them.

Because not all technical music is good. The same goes for a lot of contemporary classical music. It can use the most dense, complex of harmonies, wonderful counterpoint, and be very technically challenging to the performers. None of these things make good music. It makes technical music. Good music is very subjective, but generally there is some sort of melody or something aside from pure technique. It's very hard to describe, but even a child can distinguish music that is written with real "musicality" as compared to music that's written with only technique in mind.

Good question.
