Solaris
« on: April 05, 2008, 08:08:54 AM »

I made this for Weak-Net a few days ago while idle at work:

http://zombie.el.cx/texts/hacking/pdfs/solaris-newbs.pdf

If you run metagoofil like this:

"python metagoofil.py -d sun.com -f pdf -l 500 -o sun.com.html -t sun-dot-com"
and
"python metagoofil.py -d opensolaris.org -f pdf -l 500 -o opensolaris.org.html -t opensolaris-dot-org"

from any *nix machine you will get about 750 pdfs on Unix skill, from introduction to massive manuals of advanced system administration for anyone interested in learning more about real UNIX.
Here is a link to a girls weblog who works for Sun that has cool insider info and pics about Solaris and Suns new hardware and events:

http://blogs.sun.com/mary/tags/solaris

Here is a YouTube user with some really great Sun/Solaris stuff including video tours of Sun's server hardware:

http://www.youtube.com/user/SunMicrosystemsInc

This video is my fav, i watched it for inspiration before my interview and first day at my new job:

or if the YouTube hotlink fails:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/KZ5sL5niW2w&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/KZ5sL5niW2w&rel=1</a>

I have really come to like this Operating System and this company.  The Sun hardware i have holds up like a set of tanks on a battlefield.  heh.  I have been in the process of migrating from Linux to Unix slowly so i can take my system administration tests soon.  And, really.. it's a big change.  i thought they were closely related, but they aren't.  just like i have been dealing with Vista and XP a lot, which i have also come to respect, but still think it is like a toy OS.  There's useful things you can do with the command line in DOS if you get familiar with it.

each one seems to have its own charm and good/bad qualities.  :)  Once i get to the AIX/HP-UX part though i think i might take a vacation.

If you are interested in at least giving SunOS10 a try there's also a live CD called Belenix:

http://www.genunix.org/distributions/belenix_site/

which is cool, and i will always be around for PM's so far i think i have helped like 12 people in their windows->Linux migrations :)

oh yeah check it out, i got an email from Dennis Ritchie a few days agao too, when i decided to email him and tell him how much i loved Unix:
Code: [Select]
Thanks for the kind note.  The years do move on-- I never
imagined the system would last so long!

  Regards,
  Dennis

Java sucks...... I'm stuck in the middle with sun due to the shittyness of java and the awesomeness of a mouse with three buttons.....

I hate solaris too. There's one sun machine at work that I have to deal with and I hate it.

Congratulations on your new job working with a highly unpopular company!

wow, Ubuntu has ruined peoples intellect..
I dont work for Sun, but that is within my 5 year goal. I didnt realize how little people really knew about Unix.  I hated it once before too, but now that my migration is almost finished i dont see myself as a Linux Appolagizer anytime soon.

We do have Sun blade 8000's though and i was promised a chance to hang out with them soon :) anyways, have fun with your Ubuntu OS's then!  I figured with the title of the Board and all, there would be diversity.

thanks for the lame point, i appreciate it.  I actually forgot, i just finished a paper on file permissions using the sticky bit, which still applies to your ubuntu machines.  http://www.zombie.el.cx/texts/hacking/pdfs/stickybits.pdf Its a good idea to use it on community hardware, i think it is anyways.

Ubuntu has not corruped me I have used many a linux distro and each of them has their advantages and disadvantages. I happen to also like Solaris, I have been looking for actual sun hardware for a while so I can actully use the SPARC version that I have. I will have to give Belenix a shot, it sounds good.

since when was there such a strict sun vs. ubuntu dichotomy? just because people aren't a fan of the os you like doesn't make them ubuntu users. and it's not so terrible a thing if they do use ubuntu.

i don't hate sun, but i wouldn't use it. i also don't use ubuntu.

Well, when you think about it, Ubuntu seems to be the most popular of Linux OS's.  My Essential System Administration O'Reilly Book just makes me like REAL UNIX more than Linux, I mean, don't get me wrong, i use ubuntu too (or did until yesterday) on my MacBook (sold it), it's fine, i was just picking on someone in particular. I am going to put it on my eee pc 900 when i get it too (eeebuntu), im not a fan of the tabbed desktop given by Xandros, and wouldnt touch windows xp on one of my own machines if it were the last thing i did.  i r GNU fan, believe me.

Would you rather be forced to use only a command line or only the Solaris Java desktop (gnome desktop on java framework :P) for the rest of your life?
