I don't know if I buy the way they got the picture... I mean really, they can pinpoint the sim (triangulate the phone) but how does that give them any access to the phone itself? I think perhaps he sent a MMS with his pic and the carrier copied that.

Some phones, such as the Sidekick, sync up everything to an online server.  This is how Paris Hilton's contacts and pictures were found a few years ago.  Maybe it was a phone that worked like that and the writer of the article just didn't know what he was talking about.
