A Few Newbie Questions
« on: January 24, 2013, 03:47:49 PM »
Hey all,

I've recently discovered the joys of phone pranking and soundboards, and was amazed how incredibly cheap a domestic calling subscription for Skype is.  I've hammered out all the technical aspects of getting x audio to go to y output and all that, but I had a few questions for the community that I didn't want to trust Google or Yahoo Answers to answer for me.

I know the golden rules for not getting caught are don't call emergency services, suicide hotlines, and don't threaten people with Rick the Mullet Man, etc.  I know Skype doesn't provide perfect immunity, but is it safer than a land line if the information is the same or just as accessible as a land line (I.E. a judge approving a subpoena for records, etc.)?  I just want to make sure I have all my i's dotted and t's crossed.

Here's my legal interpretation (then again I'm not a lawyer):
I was originally thinking that it would be really easy now that Skype is part of Microsoft, but Skype is still registered as a Luxembourg company, which would make it harder?

If you haven't read it yet, http://www.phonelosers.org/rules/ is a good page to read to help answer your question.  I've seen plenty of stories over the past few years where Skype pranksters have been caught by police.  Police these days understand what Skype is and they know how to subpoena records if they need to.

The best thing to do is to never call your victim more than once.  And in that one call you make to them, don't make them feel threatened in any way.  And most importantly, don't call anyone that's local to you, because that makes it really easy for the cops to visit your house.

everything that rbcp is very very important. personally, i think the most important thing of all of course is to not make a person feel threatened. if you dont let a person feel threatened in a call, then it never gets to a point where it gets out of hand, and thats a general good rule of thumb. its better to make a call where a person is confused, says 'what the hell?' be it out loud, or in their head, and nothing else is said until they speak, rather than saying the wrong thing that puts a person into a panic. if you pay attention to rbcp's way of making calls, after a while you will see that he has a great sense of this. some of the best prank calls are ones where the person is truly and solely confused, but stays on the line to see what happens next. with any call, just like with any conversation with anybody, its give and take. that is i think what makes a great prank great, the feeling of suspense in both the execution as well as the reaction.

I haven't made a prank call since 2008, I haven't been caught not making them the whole time.
