I thinking of getting a skype phone and service, in place of a cell phone.
The only problem is the phones are fairly expensive. Is there any way to get a cheap WiFi phone? If not would it be justifiable to pay 179$ for a phone?

How much are you paying currently for phone service?

Not much. I'm really not sure, sorry.

Skypephone:
Pros-
Cool hardware.
Pay one year for what conventional service would cost for 1 month.
Call Pc's
no telco's to deal with
Cons-
only works in wifi coverage (at home, office, downtown, neighbors house)
Not great if your car breaks down on the highway or you are stranded in the woods
$200 for the phone
quality slightly lower than standard cells. (from what I've heard)

Bottom line: If you live in a wifi crammed area, and want cheap cell service (skype in and out are about $15 a year each) go for it.
I think they should include a mini standard cellphone antenna so if you absolutely NEED to make a call, you can do it for a nominal fee.

Then your obviously not paying for your phone service now. So why the sudden change in the current situation?

Skype phones are really only good in england, where they have wifi on entire kilometers. but in the US, skype phones are a nice expensive luxury.
Also, the battery life on them sucks, as well as the impact damage from dropping them. Because you will drop it eventually. your best bet is a bluetooth device with a usb dongle.. I mean yeah the skype phone is completely pc free but it's really not an equivalent value when it comes to money vs usage.
Just get the prepaid service where you can dial in and then dial out from that 800 number. add said 800 number to your tmobile 5friends thing and you're not paying anymore overages and getting the best international rates money can't buy.
