Seconded. Could someone please explain the whole beige boxing thing to us non-technical types? I want to get into phreaking but some of this stuff sounds really confusing, especially all this stuff with boxes. Do they have to be boxes, by the way? Can't they be cylinders or something? Why just one shape?
-
AHHHHH.
A beige box is just a normal telephone, except instead of having an RJ-11 end, it has two alligator clips.
This isn't a beige box, it's actually a tone generator, but you can use the device as a passive adapter.

So think, normal phone, just with clips.
-
Whoa! RJ-11! Alligator clips? Tone generator? Jesus, slow down! Now what do you mean it's like a normal phone with clips? What are clips? You mean movies?
-
Take your normal el cheapo phone and look at the clear plastic end that you would plug into the wall. That plastic end is a male RJ-11 adapter. Now look at the wires that terminate(end) in the plastic end, you will notice there are two wires.
Now if you were to cut that end off and strip the insulation off the phone cord, you would be left with two insulated wires. Just strip each of those wires and solder an alligator clip to each wire. You are now a proud owner of your very own beige box.
-
Cool! So where can buy these special El Cheapo phones? I usually buy phones at Radio Shack and I haven't seen the El Cheapo brand there. I'll ask the guy at the counter next time I'm there.
-
I'm about to cry. Please say that was a sarcastic remark?
-
I hope its not. I could just picture the results.

(sorry for the off-topicness of this reply) I've been having some trouble stripping the green and red wires. I've tried so many times that its starting to look like christmas from all of the cut off red and green wires. Any advice?

If you're too cheap for wire strippers, use your teeth. Teeth work perfectly for phone wire. Just hope the phone doesn't ring while they're in your mouth because that hurts.
-
Oh, by the way, will El Cheapo phones help me hack phone company "switches"?
-

Yes. Only El Cheapo brand phones will do. Watch out for the Chinese remakes; they have a built in security chip that notifies Ma Bell security if you use them for switch hax0ring.
-
ZOMFG, headdesk.
Make sure you hook a flux resistance modulator in parallel with the green wire though, so the telcos won't detect your any residual oscillation signature tone echoes. And be sure to get a good list of fun numbers. And give JoyBubbles a call.

You really wanted to ask, "how do I hack?" didn't you?

a. 1. cheap; inexpensive and of inferior quality; as, an el cheapo cigar.

El Cheapo is a Mexican name brand. They supply inexpensive items witch may not be the best of quality however they still function properly. They are a top suppliers of dollar stores across the United States and parts of Canada.
Lately El Cheapo has had trouble with the law because of they have been using sweat shops in Mexico and in South America to create most of their merchandise.

i use a lighter and my shirt. the heat usually unravels the copper inside when i pull the plastic off though. heh. but you just put the cord under the tip of the flame and then have your hand under your shirt (old shirt) and pull it off. :)

El Cheapo brand also features advanced hax0ring features and you won't get caught by ma bell.

I've seen this happen to someone at work. It's funny how much voltage a phone line carries.
If you really want an easy method of making a beige box: buy a $2 phone from Value Village, and then strip those wires. After that, it is just a matter of going to Radio Shack and purchasing some alligator clips, and then somehow attaching the clips to the wires. You have to make sure that the right coloured wires are used, although I have heard of cases where there are some really cheap phones that can just have any wire used.

Your "its funny how much voltage a phone line carries" is a joke right?

I once saw a baby for sale there once.
Okay, okay, bad joke.
I recently realized that with the advent of POTS over Fiber (I'm coining a new term! "POTSoF") beige boxing might actually start to die out.
-
beige boxing is simple. all you do is take a cheap phone so you don't mess up on a good phone like a noobie, then you get a phone cord and you cut of one end so one of the jacks is off. then what you do is take the red ( ring ) and the green ( tip ) wires and you trash the black and yellow wires. if there are no color coated wires then you need a new phone cord. cut the red a green wires and connect the two wires to aligator clips and make sure they are connected perfectly. then go to a tni box and pwn. if you have questions email me at teleomega@gmail.com.

Says the guy who's 'coding a computer to make herz tones.' And thinks it's funny.

cut the red and green wires
Not everybody takes cut to mean circumcise, boy-o. It's called 'stripping.'
if you have questions email me at teleomega@gmail.com.
Because your great advice that poorly mirrored about 300 posts on this site and a few in this thread alone was so demonstrative of your telephonic might that someone who started the thread in February is going to avoid using a public forum filled with phone losers to give you a boner while you refer back to totse .txt files on the subject.

Lawlz, I think he haxx0red you there.
Seriously, If you have to look at totse everytime you talk about phreaking... You have problems... Totse's nice... But there's a reason everyone hates it. You'll have to find out for yourself

I too am curious. I've found my method of hacking switches to be most ineffective:
