Title: PLA Wiki
Post by: Raptor on March 18, 2007, 03:45:49 PM
Rbcp, you should start a PLA Wiki, so us forum goons can edit and write stuff about PLA, when you are too lazy to! The software is open source, so what have you got to loose?

What's the best software to use for that?

wikipedia uses MediaWiki, you could look into that.

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki

there is a download link on that page.

Hell, I'd host it except I don't have a server  :(

I downloaded it and set it up.  I'm just waiting for the MySQL database to update so we can actually use it.  Usually it only takes a few minutes but for some reason it's taken over an hour so far.

I was going to fill in all the Wiki Install info and title it as "HACKED by THE CaCTUS", but I was too lazy.

I don't think you'd be able to.  All of the information you put in has to go into the database, which you don't have the login or password for.  It was a nice thought, though!

When will it be up?

Okay, the wiki is set up.  It's completely empty, so do whatever you want with it.

Do you think that you can tie in accounts on the message board with accounts in Mediawiki?

Maybe.  I'm looking at some stuff on Google right now about it and it seems like it might be possible.  I'm not sure if I'll trust myself to actually do it, though.  That Wikimedia package was a bitch to set up.  I had to change a few pieces of code around just to fool it into working.  I'd hate to do something wrong and crash the forums.  If I think it's safe to do, though, I will.

Nice logo!  I'll put that up as soon as I figure out how to.

This wiki program is causing me weird errors with Wordpress.  Which is weird since it's not connected to Wordpress in any way.  I'm probably going to delete and reinstall wikimedia tonight if I can't do something about it.  And if that still doesn't help, I'll have to just delete the wiki.  Hopefully it won't come to that, though.

So what should we use it for?  We've already got the official PLA wikipedia page.  This should be different.  Maybe a small bio on each of the forum members?  Or some kind of phone mob thing?

You can write about each forum member, each episode of PLA radio, Just all the stuff that would get deleted out of the normal PLA wiki page

What's up with the Recent Changes page? http://www.phonelosers.org/wiki/index.php?title=Special:Recentchanges

I have been going there to see all the new pages that have been added / edited that are not linked to from the main page, but now I can no longer click on the artical names. Most of the page is now just one link that directs to http://www.phonelosers.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page#Getting_started so I'm have had to resort to searching each artical name / appending the URL just of view them.

CountyKid actually founded the PLA as an escort service before handing it over to RBCP. RBCP later fellated CountyKid for asking questions regarding the z09 gerbil conspiracy. Long after people stopped asking what happened to sexy CountyKid, RBCP created an alternate account on the PLA forums with the handle "CK" in a poor attempt to have us all believe CountyKid was straight.

Who the hell wrote this shit?

Don't be ashamed, CK.  We all have to start somewhere.

Sorry everyone, but I've taken the wiki down.  It's only temporary, until I figure out why it's causing issues with the rest of the site.  I saved the database before I deleted it, so everything will still be there when I put it back up.

Sooo...I tried to reinstall the wiki.  It seemed to work for awhile but then it started causing all those same problems with Wordpress.  So I tried installing it on a different web space, the one for phonelosers.com.  I never even got it fully working on there and it began causing the same problems for me.  I did some searching in the wiki forums for help and quite a few other people were having the same issue and there doesn't seem to be any real answers for them.

I really like the wiki idea and it sucks that I can't make it work right.  Maybe a new version will come out and it'll have the problems fixed.  I'll keep reading, though, and maybe I'll find a solution for this one.

Would you be able to set the wiki up on an independant page and then have a *eek* frame to make it look like it would normally be.

I have experience with MediaWiki.  When you installed it on phonelosers.com - what were the errors?  Were they DB related?  Did you get errors during the installation process?  I have agree - a wiki would be perfect for this medium.

The database connection was constantly timing out on Wordpress.  I have no evidence that this was caused by Wiki, but it only does it after I install Wiki.  When I get rid of Wiki, everything is fine again.

And everything about installing Wiki just sucked.  I've never had to deal with so much bullshit just to get a PHP program to run.

That's really odd.  I usually see that type of error when databases are bridged together.

I have a MediaWiki setup and I recall having to manually create the database myself rather than the installation script doing it for me.  The program is picky.  The next version of PHP will eliminate a lot of factors that disrupt compatibility issues between your server and certain PHP programs.  Maybe then it'll be easier to install; meaning once an upgrade is done.

"I wishs thats I had sees it befores it gots all broken and such", would have been a way to word that with better grammar, (assuming you're from Alabama.)(Sorry to everyone from Alabama.)

Remember the good ole days in 2007 when PLA had a wiki?  Today I was looking into wiki software again, and I happened upon wetpaint.com which lets you create your own wiki.  Seems like it does everything that the old mediawiki did and without the bizarre problems and conflicts that I had before.  So I set one up and here it is:

http://phonelosers.wetpaint.com/ (http://phonelosers.wetpaint.com/)

Right now it's configured to let anyone edit it, even people who don't have a wetpaint.com account.  I'm not sure if we'll need to change that someday or not, but go ahead and sign up for a wetpaint account just in case.  Put anything you want in the wiki.  Have fun with it.  Create forum user bios and stuff.  Let's see what we can do with this thing.

Remember the good ole days in 2007 when PLA had a wiki?  And the good ole days in 2008 when I reminded you about the wiki?  Well I've got the original wiki running again!  It's the same software and at the same address and this time it isn't making my server cry.

Unfortunately, I don't know where my backup file of the original wiki is.  I remember you guys posted some great stuff on it during the short time it was up.  I'm pretty good about holding on to files, so I might end up finding it someday so I can re-add the stuff that was lost.  There's also things from the Wet Paint wiki that need to be moved over probably.

Please don't screw up any of the data that's already there, but feel free to add things to it and keep things mostly factual unless you just have something really hilariously fake to stick in there.
