Dear Jammie, I'm gonna be making a run for the west coast this summer. The only problem is, what is the most efficent way to get out there?
My car gets 36mpg on the highway, and I'd like to see Vegas, LA and San Francisco before heading back to Kansas. Would it just be easier to fly to Vegas, hitch a ride back out to LA with someone from DEFCON or what?
-
I was about to offer to drive you out since I kinda want to go to defcon this summer, but there's no way my truck is making it to Kansas and there's no way in hell I'm going to LA with you. So, never mind.
-
Get a red convertable, two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a shalt shaker hal-full of cocaine and a whole galaxy of multicolorded uppers, downers, screamers, laughers, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of budweiser, and a pint of raw ether.
This method may not actually get you to DEFCON. Bring along a .357 for bat country.

It's more than lame, it sucks. Riding buses long distances is very unfun.

It really depends on how much time you're looking to spend at each place, how much time you're looking to spend travelling (do you care? how flexible are you?) and what your budget constraints are. Clearly the most efficient way is to get direct flights to each of them and rent cars at each location =) But I don't think that's what you're asking.
Love,
jammie

That is so old it was in "steal this book"

Alright faggoths:
1. Riding a bus long distance isn't fun. I rode a bus from NYC to Baltimore, and it was among the most tedious experiences I've ever had in my life. Altalp told me she rode a bus from Vegas to Oklahoma just after 9/11 and was complemplating suicide before even crossing into Utah.
2. I don't like airplanes. Not just because I have a fear of flying, I don't. I want to take as many cases of beer, liquor and hard drugs with me to Defcon. Okay?!
3. I can't rent a car, I'm under 25 and I don't have any car insurance in my name.
4. I like pie.
5. Anyone need a ride to Defcon?

Train hopping sounds awesome.

Only if you have a thing for getting assraped by a hobo and getting assraped in prison for a Felony 1
-
Boohoohoo a felony. I'd better be careful about all the TTY abuse, various forms of toll fraud, counterfeit, trespassing, and all the other things I might commonly do that are probably also felonies. It's only illegal once you're caught.
-
Dick! Anyway, is anybody from the Northwestern part of the country going to DEF CON. I wanna try to hitch a ride down there.

Dear Murd0c,
Well the hard liquor and beer... if you had the money it's just easier to fly. There has to be a way to get hard drugs in Vegas. Flights only seem to be around 230 roundtrip. If you use priceline.com, you might be able to find something even cheaper.
As for LA and San Fran, you should be able to find a ride. I suggest going onto Defcon message boards and seeing if you can catch a ride with a fellow geek. I also suggest checking out craigslist.org's "rideshare" section. For example, the one in San Fran is http://sfbay.craigslist.org/rid/. Maybe put up a post and see if anyone takes you up on it.
If you get 35 mpg, say gas costs... $2.30. 1350 miles to Vegas / 35 mpg x $2.30 = $88 each way, not counting food and if you decide to spend the night somewhere. This does not include the riding you'd be doing to get to LA and San Fran.
If I go to Defcon, I might go to LA too. If I remember, flights were pretty darn cheap there too. As they were for San Fran and LA.
Maybe just take it easy on the hard drugs?
Good luck! Let me know what you end up doing.
Love,
jammie
PS - If I end up driving, I'll let you know.

Not to mention the convenience of not wasting 2 full days just to drive there.

Is your car Gas or Diesel?
If it is Diesel, Buy vegetable oil and use that instead of Diesel , believe me it will save you a sh*tload of moula ;D
-
Don't pay for it, mooch it off McDicks.

It won't work, It's way too impure , if you put that stuff in your tank you can forget your car starting until you've cleaned the whole system.
Unless you mean asking if you can get a 8 gallon bottle of fresh, unused stuff, that would work. ;D
-
I saw it on Mythbusters, you have to strain it first.

Yeah, that takes a long time and you've got to be careful to strain it all and not get any bits in it.
And if you have time to strain that much oil, well, great money saver, if you don't, just buy some.
;D
(Plus it may be illegal in some states for tax reasons.)

This isn't Europe, and almost none of our passenger cars are diesel powered (save for a couple Volkswagons and mid-to-late 1980's high end Mercedes-Benz's). So the vegatable oil thing is out, besides, Vegatable oil costs about $2.50 a gallon any fucking way.
-
Yeah, but you can get those Mercs hella cheap now, and they're reliable too.

There's diesel cars everywhere around here. Bunch of hippies in this town.

Gas is >$3.00 in LA

New vegetable oil is expensive. Used vegetable oil is cheap.
I know you said that you don't want to fly but you might still want to try this:
Buy a round trip ticket to LA with a stop-over in Vegas. Get to Vegas. Miss your flight to LA. Have them rebook you for free for an LA-bound flight that leaves after Defcon. Get on it. Enjoy yourself. Thenm, whem you're done, you can use the return-part of your round-trip ticket to get back. In theory you shouldn't be charged any extra for any of this.

I think you missed the part where he was asking how to get to DEFCON.
Plus airlines are stoogy bastards.

How 'bout this, you steal used oil from McDicks, sell it to some hippies, then raise enough dough to hire a chauffeur.
I was about to crack the joke:
I raise dough by selling yeast.

Uh, what? Defcon is in[/b] Vegas. So thus, by telling him how to get to Defcon/Vegas and Los Angeles on one round-trip ticket, I'm telling him about what's a good way to get to both. This, if I remember correctly, was the initial inquiry.

How is that going to get him to DEFCON on time?

Okay, did you actually read my post?
What I said right before that sentence was:
Buy a round trip ticket to LA with a stop-over in Vegas. Get to Vegas. Miss your flight to LA.
Do you understand now how he's going to get to DEFCON on time?
