So I just got my FC Twin in, and as a result have been playing SNES/NES for most of last night and today. While playing, I noticed that oldskool games had some great music. So, I want to know what games everyone thinks had the best music.
I'm thinking playstation and older.
Personal favorites:
FF3 - Best use of variation and a singular theme throughout many songs.
Super Mario Bros (NES). After 15 years, the castle theme still gives me the willies.
Earthbound
Doom (SNES) - NOT the Genesis version, as it had pretty shitty music.
Bubble Bobble - Face it; this game had one of the best theme songs ever.
I can't think of many others right now, but I'm sure there are tons. Anyone else care to chime in?

I disagree with you for one reason:
Where's the continuity? The music jumps genres, instrumentations, and themes constantly. FF3 is written like a Wagnerian music-drama - the tempo and mode of the music convey emotion while situations, characters, and events all have individual themes and motives. It's beautiful. The individual songs in ff7 are very nice, but only Sephiroth and Aeris have any sort of continuity with the music as it pertains to their individual theme songs vs. the rest of the in-game music.

I only played about two games for the N64 and the only games I remember playing for the playstation were GTA2 and Die Hard w/ a light gun. For that reason I can't really say any music for consoles before PS1. I do remember that Pokemon Blue had quite a kickass soundtrack however.

Arnold Shoenberg was revolutionary. That doesn't make him any good.

Mega Man music pwns all.

Agreed. Mega Man 2 music is deadly. 3 is pretty good too. Journey to Silius is super bass-y and great. The silver surfer while being a terrible game had this music that is all turntableist inspired, a real must hear. Crono trigger had some good themes, Frog and Magus especially. The Castleviania series is also great, every once in a while I'll hear a guitar lick and just be like "that fucking castlevainia style" I don't know what it is,but you know it when you hear it.

I listen to a lot of VGM inspired music like Hella, HORSE the band and The Advantage, so this shit's great
My list (by track):
1. Metroid - Kraid's Theme (NES)
2. Legend of Zelda - Dungeon (NES)
3. Mega Man 2 - Wiley (NES)
4. Mega Man 2 - Bubble Man (NES)
5. Commando - Main Theme (C64)
6. Journey - Seperate Ways (Arcade; yes Journey had an arcade game)
7. Streetfighter II - Balrog's Theme (SNES)
8. Batman, Return of the Joker - Main Theme (NES)
9. Super Mario World - Ghost House Theme (SNES)
10. Ninja Gaiden - Life Or Death Duel (NES)

I really love the music from the NES game 'Maniac Mansion'. Great game too.
