So I got sick of having to plug in my computer and suffer through a boot menu any time I wanted to do some gaming, so I bought a DS used (I also bought it because of the badass reviews and homebrew scene appearing). Now what do I do? Do I need to install DSLinux before I can run any decent homebrew apps, or should I just work with ones compatible with the already existent firmware? Which media dock/bypass/etc should I get? Is there a decent ported/native web browser, or do I need a net connection at home to run the app?
Trev, Phish, anyone else, I'm hoping you can help me out here, because as cool as FF3 is, I'm sure I'm going to get sick of it soon.
-
is it a ds? or a ds lite? and you cant "install" linux, it runs like a live cd does, but from a "flash cart," and yeah, get a copy of emule a big (fast 80x+) CF card, and a max media dock. download all the games you want, patch them with max overload (max media dock .nds file patcher) and run them [the patched ROMs] with either the "Triforce" or "Max Overload" emulator.. a quick google search will bring all of these up. and get an account with ds-scene, it's free, and has tons of great homebrew (homemade) games/apps/browsers/ etc..

i think i ended up with ~150 ROMs working. these better instructions here:

If you have the DS Lite (polar white) And you get teh IRC, web browser, mp3 player, netstumbler, and movies to work (and you CAN) it becomes the SEXIEST PDA EVARRRRRRR!!1

You can get a games and music flash card for about 20 bucks from walmart.
It is the kind you put the micro sd card in. It comes with a 128 mb micro card. You can basically run anything from there.

yah, i guess theres now a DLDI tool for it?? when i had it there wasnt, and i couldnt run a TON of stuff, in fact MicroSD sucks by itself, so im happy i got the Max Media Dock.

oh yeah, and buy this:

The DS lite actually makes a good PDA? Hmmm...if only it had some sort of keyboard support it'd make a great covert device...
-
well, it does. it's just a touch screen keyboard, very easy to use woith the stylus and IRC. :D
-
What kind of drive space am I looking at?

What would you do with it covertly?

I can think of quite a few situations where appearing to have a gaming device when I really have a portable wireless-enabled linux box could come in handy, I'm sure you could too.
-
there is aireplay and aircrack for it. also, for the psp theres an ssh client, but, i havent found one for the DS. im sure one will be made soon. When i first bought my DS i knew it would one day be like a PDA. Theres nice little OS's you can run (again like a live cd but saves settings) from ds-scene, like DS-Organize, or Moonshell, and also DS Linux.
-
According to the wiki it has ssh

I didn't know they did wireless. That is pretty cool, then.

I got a 1GB MicroSD for $8 online for my GPS
-
So I had to order the MMD + CF card ($50 for the two separately on Amazon), and I started downloading my nds games and some movies, but is there a decent GBA emulator for DS? I've been searching for two days, but I can't find anything with a good review or even with decent instructions for patching roms (if necessary)
-
no i dont think there is one, theres GB/GBC but not GBA (that i know of) thats good you got the dock, its so worth it. in fact i rarely use my ipod any more since i bought one!
-
There's a 4gb max media player which you can use instead of the dock. $65 on amazon.
-
The player uses a really, really slow hard-drive that has hardware support to "match" the games 'n' music card. And the seek time is really bad. Most people who use it end up switching to a CF card, so it would have cost me more.
UPDATE: DS can't emulate GBA, I found out. It has to do with the hardware and ram issues. It's the same reason most people who plan on using the web functions of DSLinux end up getting a Supercard or M4 instead of a MMD.
-
yeah i bought a 2GB 80x Sandisk CF card from ebay or something for like $50. It holds a lot of stuff. I would get a CF card that seeks at 80x or above to be safe. Each ROM is about 64~128 MB. and movies rip (using the software cd that comes with the dock) from avi's or mpg's to d3v files. Which arent very big themselves. :)
-

I got the supercard, superkey and a 1gig sd card. Upon converting the nds roms according to the instructions here:
http://eng.supercard.cn/manual/software.htm
they have instructions for loading gba games, so I would guess they work with supercard.
-
Yeah, I forgot about that part. The Supercard CF allows 32 megs of ram to be loaded, which are needed for web browsing, gba playing, etc, etc.
Trev, do you have a working web browser with your MMD?
-
So either my MMD or my CF card fried out on me last night, which sucks, because I got a lot of things running. I have a new CF already on the way (I ordered them cheap), but that may not be the problem. If that ends up being dead, what should I do as a replacement? Since I can't get anything in WI anyway, I'm considering either a Supercard, GBA Flash, or an R4. If my dock is dead, I'd prefer not to buy another one, since they have such limited program support and hog so much memory.
Any suggestions?
-
what?? it "fried"?? does the OS load or not, when you boot the DS? If it doesnt load your media NDS cart is broken, if it loads and your bottom screen says "no device in slot 2" try to open the dock with a small philips head screw driver and pull the CF card out and put it back in. make sure its snug. Also try formatting the card with FAT32 or FAT. I don't understand your "compatibility" issues, mine is working just fine. If you really want to just play GBA games i suggest selling the DS and buy a (new back lit LED) GBA and the GBA flash cart from here http://www.gameboy-advance.net/ to save you some money. I play DS games on the DS, and so far i am up to 180 working ROMs which is roughly $5400 USD i saved because of this thing that would have inevitably spent, bcos im a DS addict.
and yes the browser in DSorganize is working fine, in fact if you havent checked out DSorganize in the first place i suggest you do. http://www.dragonminded.com/?loc=ndsdev/DSOrganize
heres some of its features:

So one of the posts I made never got added b/c of a network time-out. That kinda explains things.
I found a MMD compatible build for dsOrganize. If you look, trev, it seems most people have trouble loading it. Maybe they don't know how to patch and re-name the file? I CLEARLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT, EVER..
My flash card crapped out on me. When the MMD was shipped, the pins for the cf card were facing slightly downward, which meant that excess pressure was required to set the cf card. Rather than take the dock apart and bend the pins back, I kept applying that pressure. Eventually, the card (thankfully not the dock) quit on me. I can't load it in a standard card-writer, either, so there's no re-formatting. I just lost $20 on that one, but my 2 gig came in today, and it worked, so I'm not too bugged.
dslinux doesn't work. I have the mmd build, as well. my old card would load but not login, new card won't load. I'm going to try making it my default bootme instead of running it within dso, but I don't know if it will work.
Working rom collection is up to 15 for me. will get MUCH higher when I find a faster-reading card. Formatted to FAT by default.
Moonshell works. The newest build solved the setup issues I was having.
dsaim works, as does the dso browser. I didn't realize I had to set up the wfc in a ds game to be recognized.
nitrotracker works... sort of.
I don't care that much about gba games. I said that only bc it would have been cool to get a few gba carts working, but if I'm not buying any ds games, I can afford some gba carts used.
-
UPDATE: dsLinux works as well. I set it as the default bootme file, and that solved the issues. I was trying to open it from dsOrganize, which was quitting bc it was trying to auto-patch the nds file before opening it, causing an error (linux.nds doesn't have a dldi section).
I'm going to start playing with that now, as a matter of fact.

good good good good to hear! i remember i had to do something funky when i booted into DSOrganize the first few times, like set the system clock back to 0:00am, er something. but it worked great. Ds-Scene is a great place to get stuff, but you can google more, theres so much out there for this thing, and think about in the future how much shit we will be able to do with this bad ass handheld.. xD A few people are working with the libs of free VoIP clients for the DS, so thats something to look forward to. Also i just bought a 4GB Sandisk 133x CF card from Best-Buy, (called extreme III i think). I formatted it to FAT32, and its fast, and fits like 40 ROMs on it. Or every episode of PLA radio X) Did you check out the free MP3's from the DSOrganize link i left? they're pretty good too. The paint application is fun, Mooshell is kind boring, and i <3 the Apple Tone played when DSO boots up My own mediocre attempt at humor has been highly amusing to myself...
Oh, the WiFi settings were always in the DS. You just have to boot a ROM or use a real game to set the ESSID/WEP KEY/etc.. i remember the first game to have it was Mario Kart DS i think. heh. DS r0x. Oh, and mostly ALL of the Homebrew games are worth playing, I CLEARLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT, EVER. which ones you tried yet, but most of them are little puzzes or tetris clones. but some are very unique, and quite cool. like "touch me, im famous" or "everlasting love (I-III), the Kirby game, Smash Bros., etc.
have you tried Super Mario War DS?? - trev.
-
damn DSOrganize rocks, i just dl'd it again, very cool. *rainbowsmiley* *rainbowsmiley*
-
Yeah, I think I like dso much more than dsLinux. As much as I love the idea of linux on my handheld, without the ability to run multiple virtual terminals, it's sort of annoying. Moonshell is groovy as an energy-efficient media player, but I like Licks quite a bit, as well.
The NeoFlash comp build of DSO is compatible with the MMD by default by DLDI patching and then running all applications through Chism's bootloader, which WOULD rock except for the fact it tries to auto-patch all apps, which can cause un-patchable apps to freeze out. The new Arkcard does that, too, which ended my urge to pick it up. I have to find SOMETHING that can do a ram workaround, though, because you know the next set of killer homebrew apps are going to start utilizing it (seeing as almost all non-Datel cards now support at least 32 and max 64 mb ram). Supercard is going to fade out in the US pretty soon, I think, since it's so pirate-friendly. Possibly the same thing for GBAMP-style setups, like the M3, but who knows?
I can't get Warioware Touched! to work, possibly bc my card reads too slow. I tried patching disable turbo load, unpacking the rom and replacing the arm7 bin before patching, everything. It doesn't get past the "Nintendo" splash. weak.
-

we are pirates of teh internetz. if j00 want i can send j00 mine copy that worked good.
i could get past the whole annoying movie in the beginning of the game. im so glad Mariio vs. DK finally works, that game is addictive!!
-
I would love it if j00 sent me a backup
What emulator would j00 recommends I use if I want to try something other than MO? Are there other stable emulators for the MMD, or that at least patch well enough to run on it?
-
yeah the triforce emulator is stable enough. :)
-
biased, maybe...but, return it and get a PSP. Awesome homebrew and hacks for psp. Disregard this if you have a psp. check quick jump forums and www.psp-hacks.com if you want.
-
Yeah, that is biased. After the Viao fiasco, I refuse to support Sony. A company that so blatantly violates its customers' privacy is not a company that should be patronized under any circumstances.
It also doesn't have or utilize a touch screen, which is pretty damn useful. The touch-screen keyboard is MUCH better than that stupid swivel piece of shit.

w0rd. psp is for metalica fans that don't have the extra brain power it takes to look at two screens. Ive come to really hate that stupid thing, and even looking at ps3's in the vg store... i just dont understand it. Nintendo defines video games. not Sony.
hey MattGSX have you seen this?? http://moonbooks.net/moonbooks/news.php
Theres free books on that link, that are txt files that you can read via Moonshell, or DSReader! great stuff like william shakespeare, hp lovecraft, rene descarte, homer, Aesop, Albert Einstein, etc etc.. also theres old black and white movies there too all for free! (to get past the "R" section of the books you have to click "next" in the last "reference book details page.)
-
Yeah. Fuck those fuckers at XM... er... umm....
Yeah. j00 should send me that Warioware link.
-
It needs a pdf viewer so I read read my 9 million downloaded ebooks

Yeah. Fuck those fuckers at XM... er... umm....
Yeah. j00 should send me that Warioware link.
you have AIM? i could msg you teh link tonight when i get home from work. I will just set up a quick apache server to host it.

did the game work for you MattGSX?? i tested it before i hosted it.

The 4GB card was worth the 109 bucks, its fast and holds ~80 DS games/150 books/250 SNES games/250 NES games/AND bunch of mp3's.
-
I use supercard/superkey/sd and all the games work. Without a donor cart. The snes emulators won't work for shit with it, but nes and gba do. That's all I've tried so far.

whats the speed like for microsd? the cards are obviously cheaper than cf cards, thats a plus!
-
Speed is perfect for sd. I would say 100%. Don't know about micro sd but I imagine the same.
-
Yeah, the backup worked beautifully.
The more I look at them, the more I don't like Supercards. I'm not sure why, but they just don't do it for me.
A friend is using GBA Flash, which has wonderful rom support, but the firmware is teh sux, the memory is expensive, and it's slow as HELL to flash the card.
My 2gig was about $25. It reads a little slow, but I've yet to find a game that I can't run because of the speed. It did, however, make dsLinux a bit of a drag (as does not having RAM = no virtual terminals) but meh.
I'm pretty pissed off, though, because my school changed their server to https-enabled devices only, which makes the DSO browser and bunjalloo both worthless. DSHobro works, but I don't have a local dedicated server (it's slow as hell using the remote server to run the server app, otherwise I'd ask you to, trev).
Somebody is working on a wifi config device that runs as a stand-alone app, which will (in time) allow us to by-pass a game cart to modify the Nintendo WFC and (hopefully) save more than 3 connection profiles. I wish I could find the name of the app, now.
-
you guys should try the new Tingle [from Zelda] RPG, its very funny. And the Rythem and Notes game that makes an acoustic guitar emulator. very cool.
-
MCM site is down. There goes my ready supply of pre-patched... erm... back-ups.
New games have a stupid CRE protection enabled, which requires swapping out the arm 9, but the donor arm9 I wanted was on the forums. damnit
-
oh shit, i thought about swapping the Arm9, but i couldnt get any donor Arm9's to work in them..
i want canvas curse, and lego star wars II damnit! if you get the Arm9 can you PM me plz? - thanks.
-
So, I made mention of this in my forum, but I thought it would be fun here to note what can really be done with a DS.
I have two card solutions, a Cyclo DS (slot 2 for the extra RAM), MiniSD (2 1gb cards, but I haven't touched the 2nd one yet)
MMD + 2GB CF
On the MMD - autoboots to DSOrganize V3.01 w/ built-in WFC (allowing you to switch wi-fi profiles without booting a game).
Programs-
DS Bible
Max Overload (+10 games or so)
Shoot n' Watch DS
DSDoom
tons of music
Home Movies, Season 1
Hot Fuzz
This card is going to my g/f once she gets/I get her a DS, so I don't really use it that much.
On my CycloDS
Newest Supercard firmware (they update more than cycloteam does)
Nitro-Tracker (fast-tracker II software) + 20 MB or so of audio samples
AxeDS - Motion controlled synth above a cheesy drum-bass line.
M-06 - Acoustic guitar simulator. It came out in Japan, and was shittily ported/copied in Rhythm n' Notes
Electroplankton - People LOVE this game's sound when you're looking for ambiance.
MyMeldoDS - Keyboard synth + basic composition (doesn't allow tied notes or strange meters, but it does the trick)
DS Organize v 3.01
DS Linux (DLDI build)
I'm giving a concert tomorrow night using my CycloDS card. I have two songs written to play on M-06, and I'm going to do a free jam sort of thing using either Axe or ElectroPlankton.
Hopefully I can re-spark interest in the few homebrewers here.
-
My suggestion is to sell it off and with the revenue, buy a classic DMG1 and an LSDJ cart and start making fuckin' fantastic chiptunes with it. That's about the best thing you can do with a handheld console of any kind.
-
MattGSX! HOW ARE YOU!?!? have you made your own DS game yet? theres a cool RPG maker out there, i haven't touched the DS in a while, though i have an M3 Real coming in the mail. Yeah, Not since I got it working as a SIP VoIP phone. I have been playing Super Mario Galaxy! xD That game is so awesome, i swear.. Its gotta be the best game ever. Thats very cool that you performed with the DS music stuffs. I always wanted to incorporate that shit into music too, but DTMFs just sound so much cooler to me! :p Some of the newer games have been working great with the MMD, like Lego Star Wars Complete Saga, the Simpsons Video Game, etc.. I have just been watching DS-Scene like a hawk and then searching for the ROMs with mininova. I have a huge collection now, probably all of them up to date, even if they didn't work with the MMD, I kept them for the M3 Real that I will someday soon have. I just got sick of doing the ARM7 thing each time. So, buy Super Mario Galaxy you ass bags! Who the fuck is PHY-6??

Pay no attention to Phy.
Did you move to Pittsburgh or something? Never noticed your locus before.

Wasn't that where he always was? Or was it one of those 'The Trevelyn that can be found is not the true Trevelyn' things?
-
uhh.. 2Dial*Phreak is a pittsburgh Website.
http://zombie.el.cx/images/manholes/manholepix.html
tis where ive been for the last 6 years. :p
-
TREV!!!!
I haven't started making a game yet, but give me a min. I just downloaded SVIP and registered for a Freecall account. I'll try it out at lunch to see if it worked.
Also, DSO V 3.01 - 3.1 support downloads from the web-browser, including attatchments. Include that with the .nds DLDI patching tool you can run FROM YOUR DS and there's no longer a need for a PC. WAHOO.
-
OMG thats soo cool xD i have been loving the free trance sessions from the DSO site, DJ Midnight rocks!
-
Chinaemu is the best place for gba/nds roms. Sometimes it takes em a few days to get the new hotness though.
-
I had a friend that owned a rom / emulation site. His name was Vince and the site was lazyness.net
He uploaded every rom on a 14k baud modem, which isn't so incredible until you realize that he had every NES, SNES, and Sega rom ever released in US, UK, and Japan on his site. He was a nice guy, but the rest of his staff were complete fuck asses who had staged internet fights and coded VB winsock crackers in long after winsock crackers actually worked productively on AOL.
Anyways, to make a long story short, I would like some pizza.
-
PHY-6, you're a jackass. LSDJ is crap compared to the GBA synth/sequencer (the name escapes me right now). I'm buying a GBA + that cart for my birthday (next Thursday) to add to my homebrew collection, since the sound on the DS is inferior compared to that of the GBA.
DS Organize 3.1 update came out, supporting HTTPS and SSL!!! Well, sort of. My school network still can't authenticate my DS, and the server doesn't hold credentials long enough to make MAC address/IP spoofing on my laptop to log in as my DS worth it. Oh, well.
Oh, yeah: I started playing with Jam Sessions, and I realized it's a COMPLETE FUCKING RIPOFF of M-06. It even says so in the starting screen: "this game is loosely based off of "M-06 Hitu .... (I forget the whole name)... Guitar Hero DS"". I almost prefer it being in Japanese, because then at least the interface isn't trying to be helpful and shit.
Anyone have an estimation on how long the DS will last till end of life? It seems like the shit/quality ratio on new games is about 75/25 and even new homebrew is all trying to accomplish the same things (an organizer or shell style layout similar to Moonshell or DSO that will launch homebrew and commercial roms). It's getting ridiculous.
-
M3 REAL just came in the mail today xD I will test nao....................
-
Remember, none of your patch0red r0mz will run on the new card.
Be sure to update your DLDI driver and re dldi all your homebrew
FORMAT YOUR CARD!
-
whoa.
has a GBA card thats more memory and rumbles.
you put thhe ROM on the card into the NDS directory.. and it just works.
you put the homebrew into your homebrew directory.. and it gets patched and works.
whoa.
those ARM7 patches were taking me about 20 minutes per game on average.
buy an M3 Real.
-
You sound like you're advertising a Mac.
"It just works"
I'll stick with my CycloDS-SD. Before I dump any more money into my DS I'm going to buy a GBA, C-64, and maybe a GPX-32.
OMG it's may burthdaze!
-
hah! happy birthday MATTGSX!
First Id like to say that I like Mac's but Apple is a shitty company and have downgraded as far as their hardware goes. one example being switching from Atheros to Broadcom. What a joke. And the act they put on over third party apps for their phone is childish. Apple sucks. I have an old white 13" macbook with nice hardware in it though, and its the best computer ive ever owned (minus the fact theirs no "insert" key or "printscreen" etc.. Secondly check out meh post about my DS upgrade in the hack board! xD

Hey I have the M3 Real now, and can boot 2 GBA games from it - both 32Mbit (super mario world && Klonoa 1)
It's quite cool but theres a lot Home brew that doesnt work at all, and the emulators like Doom, flashback, etc, dont work either. BUT the good thing is that mp3's can be played no matter the sample bitrate, and - NO MORE PATCHING WITH MO OR MAX CRASS METHOD!!! nope! you just dump the ROM.nds into the NDS directory and EVERY single nds ROM i have tried works flawlessly.. very cool, but sadly for some reason wished more home brew worked like SvSIP and GBA games worked, like FF1 && FF2. :(

Yeah, M3's have a notoriously low compatibility for GBA games and homebrew. The R4 is even worse with it, though. The problem has to do with the firmware and the way the system loads ROM headers for commercial game compatibility, since they use clean ROM dumps that don't require patching. The cards that have the best homebrew support are the ones that don't play clean ROM dumps, such as the Supercard CF/SD Slot-2, the CycloDS-SD Slot-2, or even the MMD using a homebrew launcher like Channels and either FlashMe or Chism's alternate DS Firmware. In short, most other Slot-2 devices
I likes your DS hahks. They makes me happy in the pants.
My current set-up:
DS Fat, firmware ver. ?
FlashMe "Stealth" (normal health + safety, boots from Slot-2 in DS mode to remove the need for a NoPass and extend battery life)
CycloDS-SD, running Supercard firmware 2.65 (no auto DLDI patching - I'll explain below)
MiniVMac, 4MB version
GeosDS B+W mode (doesn't support virtual disks, so pretty much useless)
Bunjalloo
DSOrganize (see problems below)
Moonshell (it's actually on my MMD, but whatever)
NesDS
NethackDS
DSCompress (gzip compression/decompression tool)
DLDI (allowing me to patch programs using my DS, bypassing the need for a PC)
some commercial games
Since the old Cyclo products are just rip-offs of Supercards, they can use the Supercard firmware to improve commercial DS/GBA compatibility. This works because the Cyclo reads the same headers off of commercial games that are created when you patch a ROM with the Supercard "magic" patcher. The other cool thing about the Supercard firmware is that if you AREN'T using it for commercial games, you can have it boot a default file if you rename it to BOOT_SC.nds or something like that.
However, the Cyclo doesn't support the Supercard's DLDI. Though I have the Cyclo DLDI patch on the root of my card, I was still running into some problems with homebrew that auto-patched. I think it's Supercard's way of trying to fuck over "fake Supercard" manufacturers. That just means that while I can run DS-Organize, I can't actually open programs from it. Fuck that, anyway. Bunjalloo supports caching and runs faster than Shaun's browser, and DS-Organize has this really bad problem with libfat always getting corrupted. I do like to use it for the homebrew database, though, especially with the ability to use custom databases.
It's also kinda funny, but the SC firmware boots all unfamiliar file extensions in GBA mode (.nes, .src, .srm, etc, etc), and you can actually create custom firmware for it if you save it as a .bin (which is the same way Cyclo created their slot-2 firmware)
I'm still having problems with my shoulder buttons being really inconsistent on my DS. I'm not really that great with electronics, so I'm not sure if I can just clean the contacts or if I'm going to have to strip wires or what, but do you think it's really worth it? I might just try to find a DS Lite, or switch over to the GP2X once the price drops a bit.

youre doing all of that without an LED backlight???? go for the DS Lite man, Top lit just doesnt cut it...
also those L and R buttons are soldered on mush buttons similar to the push buttons soldered onto the sides of Cellphone Mobo's. I know cos of the mod I did to Ethermines DS. And the M3 Real has built in patchers that work great, but like I said I cant play games that are over 32Mbit. I am just sooooo happy I dont have to go through that shitty Arm7 process anymore.
My last memories of my Max Media Dock were patching the batch of games that came out with Mortal Kombat DS. I spent about 20 minutes per game (about 7 games or so) to find out that the patch work did nothing and it was all a waste of time. I ordered the M3's and took the MMD out side with a hammer and laid it on the street. I called up my friends brother and asked him if he wanted it with the hammer held high in the air. He said "yeah man, I wanna try homebrew.. " and i took it back inside and put it on the stand next to my dorr where i put outgoing mail. The M3 has played EVERY single NDS ROM i have tried and really thats all i want the DS for anymore, the gimmecky stuff was fun, like SvSIP, and DOOM, but i just wanna play games now.
Youre right about the compatibility though, i get kinda mad. But I look at the M3 and see that it says "movie player" on it, and not "pirated ROM player" and im fine with that. :) :) :)
NDS Lite is teh smex.

haha. I just blew some compressed air into my DS and it works like a charm again. Take THAT, need to upgrade!
Seriously, though, I really don't play outside or during the day, and the DS Lite firmware is hard as hell to flash (shorting out SL1 is a bitch on them), so I don't like dealing with it.
