Title: PLA, help me steal internet.
Post by: ClarkSideOfTMoon on August 30, 2007, 07:18:46 PM
Hello PLA Forums.

I need help regarding the internet that I'm stealing. I recently moved to Pennsylvania and am living at my lady friend's house. The problem is that they have exceedingly slow dial-up and we have to steal the old people next door's internet. They remind me of The Orville Household (from teh PLA Radio), and are generally pretty aloof. They have a wireless router subtly code-named "linksys" with no password. The only problem is that the internet goes out all the time. For my lady friend, she can steal internet easier as she has a laptop and can hoist it up in the air to get the harmful internet rays. I, on the other hand, have an iMac and when the internet is out, I'm pretty much fucked for a few hours, since my arms get pretty tired of hoisting the iMac up over my head.

Help me steal internets, PLA! What can I do to improve reception of interweb rays?

Old people don't have high speed, they have aol.

Hoisting a laptop in the air to get on the net?  Does that involve stepladders?

If your neighbors can get high speed, so can you.

Buy a better wireless card that allows you to plug in an external antenna.  I've got one by Orinoco that supposedly reaches over 1,000 feet.

Thank you Sir. I know old people usually get AOL, but these two 90-somethings have cable. It is a mystery.

Orinoco + Airodump FTW

Maybe you could go to their house when they go on holiday and add a FON repeater somewhere.

Don't know about the F5D7132, but the F5D7130 range extender is the biggest POS I've ever seen.

When you say the internet goes out all of the time, do you mean that you lose connection to the linksys, or that the linksys loses connection to the internet?

If it's the linksys losing connection to the internet, there are a few things that you can do, a few of them involve social engineering. Such as, asking them if they too, lose connection to the internet daily / hourly / whatever. Implant the seed of doubt in their ISP, have them investigate it. Old people always think that they're getting screwed, play on that.

If you're losing your wireless connection, then something is causing it. Do you / they, have / use a microwave often? Microwaves circulate through frequencies and will completely fuck a wifi signal. What is separating your two homes? Sheetrock? Stucco? Stucco uses chicken wire and is notoriously shitty for external wifi connections, same goes for brick and mortar. Do you or the neighbors have 2.4GHZ or the 5.whateverghz phones? The 5.whatever do actually use a whole bunch of bands in the 2.4GHZ range that can effect a wifi signal. Also, what other wifi points are around their AP? If they're on the same channel as the other neighbor across the street or next door, there will certainly be some interference, change the wifi channel on their unpassword protected linksys. Usually a two channel spread is ideal, but I like to jump to the other end of the spectrum.

The best thing for your connection is to move as close as you can to their AP, and stay there, if it's still fishy, change channels, or boost the signal strength (you can do that with some linksys's, netgears, and 2wire [it's for DSL, but it's helpful to know] modems). If not, get/make an antenna/cantenna.
