The airlines will give you $250 for each piece of luggage you lose when flying. The following is a good way to lose your luggage. When you get off a plane, have a friend meet you at the gate. Give him your luggage claim stubs and arrange to meet at a washroom or restaurant. Your friend picks up the bags and takes them out of the baggage room. Before he leaves the airport, he turns over the stubs to you at your prearranged rendezvous. You casually wander over to the baggage department and search for your elusive luggage. When all the baggage has been claimed, file a complaint with the lost and found department. They'll have you fill out a form, explain that it probably got misplaced on another carrier and promise to send it to you as soon as it is located. In a month you'll receive a check for $250 per bag. Enjoy your flight.
Could this still work?

I didn't think the airlines gave you anything for lost luggage anymore. I know for a fact I've never had anyone ask me for a claim stub while picking up my bags at the claim.

Few airports ask for claim stubs, but you can definitely get reimbursement for lost luggage. The airline has to pay for it in order to own it, and they need to own it in order to sell it all to some megastore in Alabama where all lost luggage is sold.
Wow, turns out they have a web site now: http://www.unclaimedbaggage.com/

Apparently, nowadays, you have to fill out a form where you tell them exactly what was in your bags and they send you money in the mail to compensate for it. Theoretically, you could do the trick where your friend makes off with the bags, and you just tell them you had a bunch of expensive shit in them.

I hope they lose my luggage someday, so I can tell them that I was carrying 50 high-end laptops.

And the Hope Diamond.

That has potential to be a great prank phone call. "Hello TSA? Yes, you lost my luggage." "What was in it? Just some clothes, my shaving kit and my son."
