I just "upgraded" my work computer to Ubuntu Gutsy, and I'm not really that impressed with it. I really prefer Fiesty, but I'm not about to wipe my drive again.
Anyway, I wanted my desktop to be visually appealing without using extra resources. This computer runs as network storage, and I am usually accessing it remotely using my DS. As such, I wanted something that was light on resources and looked as good on the small screen as it did on my monitor. I'm also setting up DSLinux on my DS again and using it as a terminal on my PC, but I'll get into that when I get into that.
Here are two screenshots of my desktop. It's using a simple gradient background, transparent single toolbar with large icons (the "nerdy" set from art.gnome) with the Dark-X window borders and Ubuntu "Human" color scheme.

This is one with my website open so you can see the window borders.
Oh, and yes. This IS pretty much all I do while I'm on the job.

Why did you call me a troll?

What do you mean, why did I call you a troll? I've never called you a troll.

What kind of job is so focused on cool looking interfaces? Or are you doing this instead of working?
-
I was doing that while I was on the phone with someone. I was maintaining a company's website, but the boss decided he wanted to take that over, and since I wanted no part to do with that train wreck, I'm handling government agency sales and customer service. That desktop represents a 30 minute conversation with someone from Social Security.

yeah, why be impressed if you are using an update for the most advanced piece of software for a computer, if all you are running it on is a piece of steaming shit.
I use teh Gutsy on the MacBook and the driver support is flawless relative to the earlier versions of Ubuntu you are whining about, all of my hot keys and function keys work perfectly, the hardware behaves better, I have more control over the machine than i would with OS X and with the updated OS its much sexier. You obviously chose not to make the desktop sexy, so why would you worry about that?
you're right im fucking wrong you happy now? fuck you matgsx. fuck. you.
fuck fuck fuck you.
here's a real desktop:

I just set up some compiz-fusion with my Ubuntu Feisty Dawn, and I really like it so far.

Beautiful. What sort of set up are you using Trevelyn? It's epic. ;D
-
whoa, trev... what the fuck? I love Ubuntu. You know I love Ubuntu. I no longer have a single Windows machine. I was running Feisty and it looked and functioned very well using Beryl with emerald and other optional upgrades. However, when I installed Gutsy (I didn't upgrade, I did a fresh re-install), the compiz "advanced desktop effects" wouldn't work. I set everything up and got the driver fixes for my graphics card, but when I tried to initialize desktop effects through the Appearance menu, it just said "desktop effects can't be initialized". I then tried downloading the recommended compiz fixes, which didn't work. I then tried the emerald theme manager front-end for compiz, which didn't work. I then uninstalled everything and tried again fresh, using the community docs off the Ubuntu wiki for running compiz in Gutsy. Guess what? They didn't work.
I'm very happy for you that they worked on your computer, but you can suck a fuck. You have mood swings like a woman and you're not my friend anymore. Your desktop, however, is epic. I'll give you that.

Hooray for lithium!

Sorry. I just found out I can't go back to school unless I come up with almost a grand in the next 2 weeks. I'm a bit edgy.
I likes your wallpaper. I'm going for more of a citrus-y theme, though.
