Title: Uhg. SP2
Post by: Nod on January 17, 2008, 10:40:28 AM
I finally got my internet turned back on so I decided to update my WindowsXP. I installed the WinXP SP2 file that I downloaded from microsoft.com and now my computer won't boot up (I'm using my old computer now.) past the windows logo and I have no clue what to do since, like an idiot, I didn't make a boot disk first. I only made a windows restore point.  I'm completely lost on how to fix it since it won't even boot into Safemode to use the restore point I made. Anyone have any ideas?

Windows restore doesn't ever work. It will just eat resources and disk space.

The update could have made a previously compatible device incompatible. Then after you update you get a nice stop error while rebooting. Windows likes to do this to encourage you to buy microsoft shit.

With cedega and wine there's not really any reason to use windows anymore

Do you have a Win XP pre SP2 disk that you could do a system repair with?

No. I wish I had. I think I have a restore disk for SP2 but it'd designed specifically for an E-machines. I'd also like to not lose everything I procrastinated backing up on my external if that's at all possible. I'm betting it's not though. I've got like five or six boxes sitting around. Maybe it's time I finally get around to linux. The worst that happens is I fuck up a computer I don't even use anymore. Best case scenario is that I can manage to get it to work and put it on one of my better computers.

If you want, I can PM you links for an ISO of XP and for a bootable CD where you can access the file system and retrieve your files to place on external media.

That would be AWESOME. I would really appreciate it.

Best advice I've ever gotten.

The restore point is only good for people who forget their admin passwords (you can reset it all the way back to day 1 when it was blank) and if you are getting to the windows logo before the error I would try safe mode, or maybe something in your computer is over heating quickly..

Here's another incredibly stupid problem. I use a shitty old laptop with a broken screen and now every five minutes or so the keyboard overloads the USB port and I have to switch it around, or use the stupid ass onscreen keyboard. Is this the port's fault or the keyboard?

Are you plugging the keyboard into a USB hub or directly into one of the laptop's native USB interfaces? Have you tried plugging the current keyboard into a different computer or plugging a different keyboard into the laptop?

Is there a reason that the laptop's keyboard isn't being used? Is there a port for a normal keyboard on the back (I haven't owned one in YEARS.) that you can use? The one I owned had all the ports for a keyboard, mouse, moniter in the back. After my screen cracked I had it hooked up that way for months before it finally succumbed to my abuse. You should check and see if you can just fit an old keyboard into it.

P.S. Much thanks to Gangals. Now I just have to figure out if one of the CD burners from one of my other boxes is compatible with this one since the one in it now isn't working.

HAHAHAHAHA.

Though my work computer and my laptop are both linux boxes now (Ubuntu 7.10 and simplyMEPIS, respectively), I still run XP on my home desktop (but I do also have a bootable key for DSL that I sometimes use). It's bloated, sure, but it has a smaller learning curve than most *nix machines, especially for older people that started using computers with something like Windows 98 where there was little/no use of the command line.
