Title: 2600 mag declares the payphone dead
Post by: MIB on April 25, 2008, 04:11:57 PM
Quote
2600, the Hacker Quarterly, has declared this year, 2008, to be the payphone’s last year. The payphone is dead, long live the payphone.

The cover of the publication’s Spring issue has what looks to be a shrine dedicated to the memory of payphone; a picture of Alexander Graham Bell adorns the top of the shrine. 1889-2008. Never forget.

I think pay phones have got another 5 years or so left in them.  We've got lots of them here, and lots of actual phone booths.  I can't see them all disappearing by the end of the year.

Fuck 2600. Everybody was considering payphones dead at least a couple of months before, but now that the "almighty" 2600 declares it dead, it's "official"?  ???

No, just fuck that.  2600 is a fucking joke. It parades itself around like some hardcore underground hacking zine but it's sitting right next to Woman's Day and Cat Fancy in fucking BARNES & NOBLE.

I've read it, and there were some interesting things in there, but I've seen far better from PLA, TOTSE and Hackaday to even CONSIDER FOR THE TINIEST SECOND purchasing.

I'm most definitely am going to get flamed for the above, but seriously. It's like the Emperor's goddamn new clothes. A fucking farce.

Is there an actual article inside about pay phones being dead?  Or is it just the cover and nothing else?

In larger urban areas, say like toronto for example payphones are few and far between except a few places like malls.  In more rural boonified areas like where I'm lurking payphones are more prevalent.  Its a sad truth but rednecks spend their money on oversized pickup trucks than cell phones.  After all most rednecks don't bother using a cellphone so payphones still see some use.  Mind you they don't really use their pickups for cargo either but thats another story

Anyone who believes that 2600 is declaring the pay phone dead are the same morons who think that The Last Hope is the last hope.

This is just Emmanuel Goldstein being a drama queen again. He's pretty good at it as of late.

But Qwest just installed new Millenniums around my house. I doubt they're going to pull them out any time soon.

A few years back at Rubicon, the lobby pay phones didn't take incoming calls.  So I called the pay phone department at Ameritech and said I was the owner of the hotel and said our phones really needed to be able to take calls.  Within a few days, the phones were ringing.  You might be able to pull something like that off at CTA.
