Title: Need help finding crystal on Cobra 19 Ultra III, *pics
Post by: tryptic on May 19, 2008, 04:53:06 PM
Hello, I recently bought a Cobra 19 Ultra III that I was excited to modify, but had much trouble finding the crystal. What I thought previously was one was just a capacitor, read Z10.250 on the top. I have included some pictures of the top of the board, thanks a lot for your help

It doesn't matter if there is no crystal in the CB(Cobra now puts 8.069 capacitors that take away the need to), all that matters is that you put in the correct crystal. So get a 6.5536 MHz crystal from one of your electronic toys and put it in the CB.The upside to you not having a crystal in your CB to begin with is that by not taking out a crystal you still get your old frequencies along with the new ones that come along with the 6.5536 MHz crystal, so you still get the CB channels!

I'm pretty sure thats the process, but I'm not sure. You might have to cut/unsolder a wire or remove a part before you get it working. Sorry, but the other guys are more skilled at this so lets see what they have to say.

Just looking at that picture tells me that the capacitor labeled C16 is big enough to house a crystal and swapping that capacitor with the correct crystal will probably do the trick.  Let me look up some specs on that PCB in my database at work and get back to you.

Would you mind elaborating on that? I looked all around but cannot find a capacitor labeled C16. My best guess still would be the capacitor that looks like a crystal at the top labeled X2 and reads Z10.250 on top. Thanks

Clearly you don't see the humor in fucking with the people who come here to ask questions about it still.  Thanks for ruining this one!

I think there's some humor left in there.

So i purchased 5- 6.5536mhz crystals, your telling me these are useless now?

Not at all, there are several useful applications for those crystals. For instance: You can replace the 8.33353 mhz crystals in DISH Network boxes with those and get free satellite TV.

Woah, what the hell are you guys talking about?

Tryptic, let me explain this to you.  Phonelosers.org has a log of internal politics with different cliques of people who hate each other.  A lot of people are upset that the details behind the cb hack were released to the public so they are saying its a joke and trying to get people to damage the crystals by doing useless things with them.

To reply to my post earlier, I'm sorry, I posted wrong.  The capacitor is labeled CM16, not C16.  A typo on my part.  I did verify this with my pcb supplier and he said the M16 classes are usually made specifically to house crystals.  You could try that.

Also, is your antennae a conductive trip system or not?  If so that crystal could have frequency variances to a small degree, but it should still work.

I heard a crazy rumor that you can get free phone calls with them.  They apparently let you whistle just like Lucky225 or something.

First off, thanks a lot for your honest help. I even talked to Cobra tech support and I got them to tell me where the frequency crystal is (said it was X2 the one that reads Z10.250 on top), but if your saying its the capacitor then those are conflicting arguments. Also, the mod will work if I replace the current crystal with the 6.5536, or am I just wasting my time? I just don't get why someone would take the time to make up some childish hoax and waste many peoples time and money... ???   As far as the antenna, it is just a screw in type with a fitting in the back, as you can see in the pictures

Anyways thanks for the help

I'd go with whatever Cobra told you.  They know their stuff better than I do.
