Title: Why Yahoo Sucks and Gmail rules
Post by: z09 on July 23, 2006, 06:58:03 PM
This all was taken from the J!NX topic http://www.jinx.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=51704&whichpage=1

Gmail needs a inventation or a phone number to limit the people who use the truly awsome service. Some people are just paranoid and don't want to give out their phone number, and it is sometimes hard to get an inventation. I have 8 yahoo accounts, all of them for spam/other things. Here are some reasons why I hate Yahoo

1. Yahoo itself sends me about 1 spam message everyday
2. They have ads in every e-mail you send out
3. They don't have that much room
4. They sell your e-mail address unless you sign up for the expensive account
5. Their filters arn't good
6. So many people use them you can never get the name you want without putting abunch of numbers behind it
7. The support team doesn't really do much to support e-mail problems
8. If you enter an "Alternate Address" they will sell that too

I can keep going on and on. I can't think of a reason why I hate gmail. So i'll list some reasons why I like them.

1. Gmail has some of the best spam filters around
2. Gmail doesn't spam you
3. Gmail doesn't sell your e-mail address
4. Gmail has so much space you never need to delete anything
5. Gmail doesn't have ads they put in your e-mails
6. Gmail has a great spoofed e-mail detector (it uses ip address to server)
7. Gmail keeps things stored in conversations so you can keep everything together and find it easy
8. Gmail has a great chat feature similar to AIM
9. Gmail doesn't spam you then filter it just to make it look like they have a good filtering service.

Once again I could keep going on and on

Why I'm trapped in the 90s, a chronological essay.  I'll have it in by tomorrow Mrs. Ferguson.  What?  You don't accept late papers?  You little bitch.

I personally hate GMail.  It is very hard to sort mail on it.  It gets corrupted every time my firewall is up so I have to close the browser, close the firewall, and then re-open it.  The colors they use are so light it is hard to tell from a quick glance whether I have new mail or not.  Blah.   :-\  And everyone told me how revolutionary it was.  I think only nerds like it.

Gmail also masks your IP address, which Yahoo does not.

Gmail does not forward your IP address in the header unlike Yahoo email.

Does hotmail forward your IP too?

Hotmail sends the IP in the mail header too, like most free email services.

Jammie, I understand where you're coming from with the rest of it, but:

The colors they use are so light it is hard to tell from a quick glance whether I have new mail or not.  Blah.

"Bold = New" just isn't doing it for you?

I need more color coding.  Yahoo lets me pick a nice lavendar theme! :D  The 80 versions of light blue just aren't working for me.

Jammie what are you smoking?  I mean, it is real bold! when you have a new e-mail.

I use it for school and I pretty much only check it at work.  When at work, it is frowned upon to check personal email, so I like when I can take literally a second and see new emails in bold and white and old ones grayed out.  Maybe my resolution sucks, I dunno.

And I like my lavender theme.  Did I mention that?

Also that starring thing is annoying.  And expanding and finding old attachments...  blech.  Yahoo! is nice and simple for us non-haxors.  I feel like Gmail is the new Linux.  Like every guy into computers can go on and on about how much better it is than the other stuff but in a year or two they end up giving up and going back to Windows.  Or they'll have Linux running on one machine they hardly use just to have it.  I predict many Gmail accounts (mine included) turning into junk email accounts over the next 3 years.

Okay, now let me have it *smurfette*

How so?  Are they gonna be giving up the info now?  I thought they were holding out.  I DO hate the Google groups navigation system.

On gmail accounts that I dont "give out" I never get any spam. Theyre not selling you out. Why would they do so, and then employ one of the better spam filters out there?

My one account that does get spammed heavily, is 99% Japanese spam. Unless any of you are experiencing this same issue, I once again state my HO that they dont sell you out.
