Recently, RogueClown and I spent some time going through our email spam for the 419 scammers who have begun including contact phone numbers in their emails. We recorded one of my calls, which you can listen to here (http://robvincent.net/audio/419_scammer_-_MST3K.mp3). More of the story behind this particular call can be had here on my blog (http://robvincent.net/journal/arc/2008/12/24/mystery-science-theater-419/).
Thanks to the familiar British lady on the voicemail of ones who didn't pick up, we figured out that these scammers are pretty much all using Skype with a SkypeIn number. This makes it cheap and easy to set up whatever scammy accounts you need with minimum effort and expense. Luckily enough, I've also got Skype going, and can have fun with them just as cheaply and easily. An entire evening of pranking foreign countries all over the place cost me less than a dollar.
So, if you're bored and looking for an all-too-deserving target to harass, look no further than your own spam folder. You get to have fun pranking some fool, who just so happens to be an actual evil scammer that would otherwise be fleecing some poor sap out of their money.
This may be the only prank call you make that actually raises your karma levels.

have i ever mentioned that you win at life?

Sorry I haven't put this up on the UPL site yet, RTF. It will be there soon after I get all the pages reworked with the new design.
MST3k ftw.

I can't believe people fall for these scams after talking to a guy like that.

This sounds like a good advert line for Skype.

Aaaaand let's have another (http://robvincent.net/audio/419_scammer_-_Apartheid.mp3). I called a South African scammer and lectured him on the evils of that Apartheid thing I saw a TV show about once.

This is funny stuff.
I want to start having some fun with these morons too. Any tips that you guys can give me for getting started.
Rob, I wonder if the scammer forgot he was trying to run a scam, while you were giving him the civics lesson.

I wish these scammers would speak up on the phone. It's hard to understand him. Funny call, though!

And that was after me screwing with the levels. I think it's a combination of crappy connections (how well-maintained are the phone lines in Scammerstan?) and the fact that I tend to get these guys out of bed at like 3AM their time.

skype should charge one super-low (and/or free) rate to Scammerstan.
-
They should include Scamdinavia as well.

i had a little fun with a lottery scammer last night...he just didn't get the fact that i wanted to know how he got my email address!
he eventually yelled me out.

And here's mine (http://robvincent.net/audio/419_scammer_-_Microsoft_Lottery.mp3) from that night. I won the Microsoft Lottery, but I just didn't feel right about it since I like Free Software.

I love how he keeps changing from English to some other language and back every once in a while.
