;D
I got one of these online and got it activated online through their site WITHOUT putting down any info of myself....was this possible? I know its a cheap ass pre-paid phone but all it needed was a serial and sim card number. The cards are a rip off in price, yet there has to be a leak in getting free air time too. Share some knowledge if you can. What also sucks is none of the cheap phones has USB connections, damn.

You cannot get free minutes. You just can't.

Buy a MagicJack (http://www.magicjack.com), use it for 30 days, send it back for a full refund.

OH YOU'RE RIGHT MAGUS! I COMPLETELY FORGOT THAT MAGICJACK = TRACFONE!
Faggot.

I was simply offered another solution. No need to get all butt-hurt over it.

Back on my topic of a crappy prepaid. I can wear a tee shirt and goto walmart and make a l33t return if I wanted. Damn, funky ass answers I get from people on this board...haha.

You could steal minutes from the grocery store. I don't advocate this but if you wanted to you could by using one of the self check out lines. Scan it then tell the attending clerk that you changed your mind or that it's not the right kind and ask them to take it off and then go like you're going to put it back. Stick in your pocket instead. You should now have an activated TracFone card.

Wouldn't work so well at a lot of grocery stores. Most every one near where I live have it all on a spindle laced with a ton of other crappy pre-paid cards. Your best bet is to do the age old method of going in with a pen, paper and a coin. Scratch off the back to reveal the number on the card, then the next couple of days just try and use the numbers to see if someone had purchased the card.
This method makes you a prick, but hey, we don't care about morals here.

With Tracfone, don't you need some number from the receipt as well as the number on the card?

I worked in retail and never asked the customers that when it printed it on the receipt. Your probably, on the tech end, right one this one. Going into a bathroom wouldnt work either ......

From what I remember some of the trac phones have starter cards in them that do not need activation, but you only get like 50 or so mins.
The cards do have to be activated though, the method they use calls scans your cards magnetic strip and sends it into a central server to validate your card kinda like a gift card.
Like ApprenticePhreak said, you can get by this by scratching off the number and waiting for it to be activated.
But most if not all stores will not let you return a tracphone after it is opened.

This may be a fluke, but I returned a $50 Tracfone to Target a couple weeks ago. I hadn't used any of the minutes or even opened the sim card, but the packaging was completely ripped open. Thing is, though, the girl at the return desk didn't even look to see if everything was there. So if I were the type of person to keep the sim card and minutes, I could have.
