The naturalist and television star Steve Irwin has died in a diving accident in far north Queensland. He was 44.

Police say he was stung through the heart by a stingray while diving off Port Douglas.

He was filming a documentary when the accident occurred around midday AEST near the Low Isles.

A helicopter arrived with paramedics on board to try to resuscitate him, but it was too late.

Cruise operator Steve Edmondson and his passengers watched on as paramedics tried to revive the television star.

"We are obviously very saddened by the news. It's a very unusual incident. We're all big fans of Steve Irwin," he said.

Irwin's body is being taken to the morgue in Cairns.

His family are believed to be flying from Brisbane to Cairns this afternoon.

Irwin, who was was born in Victoria in 1962, inherited his love of reptiles from his father.

His father Bob was a keen reptile enthusiast and moved the family to Queensland in 1970 to open a small reptile park on the Sunshine Coast.

Irwin took over the family business in 1991 and grew it into Australia Zoo.

In 1992 he ventured into television, making the first series of the Crocodile Hunter.

When the program aired in the United States, he shot to international fame.

Irwin is survived by his wife Terri and two children.

Steve Irwin should have worn sunscreen, it might have helped him block out all those harmful rays

Died doing what he loves.  That rules.

I wonder if the camera guy continued to film as the paramedics attempted to revive him.  Would make a kickass last show for him.  I'm serious, that would be the most perfect ending to a show ever.

RBCP, you should get shot while Beige Boxing and have Jammie film it.  That would make one kick ass film.

I made a Gaijin 4Koma in honor of Steve earlier today. If you don't go to 4chan, you won't get it.
The subtext is "Jesus Christ--a manta! Get in the boat!"

That wasn't as funny than Steve's actuall shows.  The best one was when a spitting cobra spat him in they eye.

"Crookey, the venom is excrusiating.  I'm going to be blind in 25 minutes if I don't get medical attention"

That was a direct quote, too.  I have it on tape.

They actually did catch the whole thing on tape... they say it shows him getting stung, pulling the barb out of his chest, and then seconds later he was dead.  I doubt they'll air it, but...

Do not mourn the loss of Steve Erwin. He lived a long full life, did what he lovd, helped animals, and died with his boots on. If Steve's up there in heaven now his one regret would probably be that he never got to see his children grow up.
What? Didn't think I could read ugoogly?

On topic: Discovery and Animal Planet are airing the final special--staring Steve and Phillip Cousteau--soon.  It's going to be a simulcast (kinda cool) and it'll be basically the special they were shooting before Steve's quite untimely demise.  Not sure when it is, but you can probably check it out on either station's website.
