Okay, I, like Generic_Phreak, am planning to break the mute function of a Millenium payfone. And I need some advice. The text files at hackcanada and elsewhere describe the mute wire as "plain copper in clear insulation". The contents of the armoured cable of my payfine are these:
One thick silver wire, threaded like rope, inside clear blue insulation.
One thick black cord, inside which is four wires: redish, green, yellowish, and copper inside blackish clear insulation.
Soooo. Where's the mute wire? We can rule out the red and green wires, obviously. But are the yellow and black wires analogous to the ones in an RJ11 jack, or not? And what is the huge silver/blue one for?
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Pix plox.

What the hell is pix plox?

What the hell is pix plox?
It means, take a picture of the guts of the phone and post them, please.

On those hybrids what happens when you call a number that hangs up on you? Do you get a dialtone again? If so then is the handset's mic muted then?
-
I don't think you get a new dial tone, and if you do, it's probably fake.
Turns out that the "reddish" wire is actually plain copper in clear insulation, which matches the description of the mute wire. But then what is the green one for...
Also, i do not own any image capturing apparati, so i can get you a photo. I'll try some ASCII:
|______| 1: a black cable containing 4 wires: black, green, yellow and clear
| | | 2: a clear blue cable containing a heavy duty silver cord.

| 1 | 2 |

It's probably not the best idea, but... good luck, I guess.
Don't get arrested/killed. And if you do get arrested, make sure you're not doing something stupid like punching the cops with your new PLA brass knuckles.
Actually, do this, but only if you have a friend with a digital cam with you. Something about a guy punching a cop with brass knuckles that say PLA or something on them rocks.

My own mediocre attempt at humor has been highly amusing to myself.. Agreed! Alpha, remember that Milleniums are geared all to fuck with their security systems that make everyone buy them. Be extra careful if you do it, dig? We don't need any Robert Paulsons on the PLA.

Have you ever considered the idea that a Millenium mutes the mic by cutting power to it? I mean, I can't figure out how one wire performs the function of muting a mic.
-
I mean, I can't figure out how one wire performs the function of muting a mic.
Just off the top of my head, one wire could bridge the two mic wires together, rendering it useless (effectively muting it). There would have to be a switch or something in the middle of said wire though, in order to un-"mute" the mic.
-
Or the payphone could just cut power to the mic from insdie the payphone.
-
Update #1: Cut the copper wire in clear tubing. Mic no longer functions. Must spend friday's lunch hour fixing. I'll try the black wire next I guess.

Hey, I didn't say it was practical. Just possible.
-
Do any of you have any electronics know how, the phone simply cuts power to it. The heav duty silver cable is probably to stop idiots like you from ripping the receiver off. As I-baLL said, the phone most likely cuts it completely. There is probably a relay inside the phone and when you lift the receiver it cuts the microphone off completely. Why would the telco just block the microphone inside the receiver. The mic is completely CUT-OFF, you are wasting your time!
-
this may seem completly un-related or possibly already mentioned, but the mute function on the phone is just a circuit.. when the circuit of the wire is complete the phone is muted, when you put in coins and make your call the circuit is broken thus letting you talk. So thank god we had smart phreaks that wondered "but what if we could make it so its not muted all the time?" well you can... I beleieve the wire is the wire in the clear shit or w/e... I'm probably wrong. but have fun with it
-
Um. yeah. Read the thread.
-
Oh shit, wait a second. The mute wire is in the handset, according to the articles. Why are you looking in the armored cable? And how did you get it open?
-
I guesses that if the mute wire is receiving power, then it must be coming down the cable.
I gnawed through the cable with a super-heavy duty pair of cutters.

Maybe it's just grounding the mic power?

Hey I also read the hack canada thing on assailting payphones and was woundering if its true what it said about the yellow wire that if you cut it. It will store the coins and when you reconnect it you get the coins
I am canadian Acid Crasher

The easiest way to get the coins is to fit a small plastic bag and push it with a wire through the coins whole. Then leave it for about 6 hours. People will attempt to call but the coins will stay in the small bag. Finally go n' get a wire and give it some hock shape and pull from the bag.
I assure you will make like 20 dollars per phone/day.
Another practical solution is to get your own terminator as John Connor did.
-
I would get my own terminator if I knew how to get in touch with my future self just like John Connor did but thanks for the advice

Are you sure $20 a day? I dont really think people use pay phones that often.
-
I have a bunch of good spots if i can get this trick to work so it could be $20 a day or more but I would still like to hear from Alpha Omicron about the wires and there functions especially about the yellow wire and if the thing from hack canada is true.

Even if you could get a bag to fit in there unnoticeable, I don't think $20 worth of coins can fit in the pay slot...
-
True but I have like 4-6 Payphones at my school 1 by my house a mini bank 1500 at my school which im working on hacking they change the password from the default :P but thats another story. A couple of empty weed bags just about the same size as the slot so I think I can get like $20 + dollars a day which would be nice 8) Its nice to have an active forum where you can talk freely

I used to stuff toilet paper in the coin slot of the pay phones in front of the Circle K I worked at. I was lucky to get $1.00 per shift. The problem is that most calls go through so the money never has a reason to come back out of the coin slot.
-
I'm going to put the bag in where the ppl put there money so they don't even get the dial tone and the phone call never goes through and i get the money and 6 pay phones at like $6 + dollars a day for like a week = $42 + dollars which isn't that bad if everything works out ;D

Or go on eBay, bid on a fortress fone, and card it. While you're waiting, go down to K-Mart and swipe a ChatterBug as well.
Then when it arrives, you can wire the escrow relay open, install the ChatterBug inside, mount it somewhere that gets a lot of foot traffic, and become very rich very quickly. The unsuspecting victims will pick up the handset, hear fake dialtone, insert money, dial, get nothing, maybe add more money, and eventually get fed up and walk away. All the while, their money is going straight into the cash can - no coin release levers here!
Move the fone around every few days, and watch the dollars add up.

** Yeah, right. If you follow these instructions, you deserve every bit of what will happen to you. So even if you're the kind of fuquad that thinks this is leet advice, DON'T DO IT.**
:P
edit: make that "chatterbug", not "wirefly". d'oh!
