Hello, I am a young Canadian *hippy* fellow. I have downloaded all your podcasts and read through your site with much intrest. So, my question to you is where does one start in this wonderful world of phreaking. Most of the information I have found seems a tad outdated so I'm not sure of its relevance. I still live with my parents so I would perfer not to have te cops busting down my door but I have acess to some neighbours internet connections, if said project should involve the internet. If you have any ideas for a good beginner's project please let me know.

You don't start by phreaking. You start by learning about phones. You honestly will get nowhere as a phreak if you aren't genuinely interested in telephony (and probably electronics).
So if you want to start, pull out your reading glasses and click here. (http://www.phrack.org/archives/49/P49-05) When you're done understanding that, go here (http://www.totse.com/en/phreak/introduction_to_telecommunications/index.html) and read everything else related to telephone systems.
Plus, learn everything here (http://www.electronics-tutorials.com/) and here. (http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/index.htm)
The very first time you will do something bad with a phone will probably be either red boxing or beige boxing, as neither really require anything other than motor functions. So to get your feet wet, you can read beige boxing (http://www.totse.com/en/phreak/boxes_old_and_new/beigeboxing179541.html) or RBCP's article on redboxing on this very site. (http://www.phonelosers.org/redbox)
Get to it.

Thanks you very much for the information. I haven't read it yet but will start in a second.

I haven't really given much thought to telephones until recently but I am one of the top electronics students at my school so no problems there.

Keep in mind that to become "a phreak" there's really never any reason to break laws anymore. Long distance is really cheap today, which used to be a phreak's primary reason for breaking laws.

Women, Arbie. Women.

So if you don't mind me asking, why are you still into it? Or are you?

He doesn't
He might try some stuff for proof of concept, but that's about it

those links to the history of the telephones were interesting...filled in quite a bit of blanks for me...very cool.
