Post by: BillCancer on December 21, 2006, 11:27:50 AM
i have been using this program called brutus for password cracking and honestly it sucks. i hate it. something always goes wrong. always. i was wondering if anyone had any better suggestions as to which program(s) i should look at getting and using.

That would be because that program is older than life itself...

I personally use Cain & Abel:

When you run Cain, doesn't it show you all the passwords from the registry in cleartext?

Brutus will bruteforce a remote login. Is that what you are trying to do?

Here's an article on using it.
Brutus article (http://www.hackinthebox.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=2667&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0)

Unless you are bruteforcing a password locally you will probably get caught.

I CLEARLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT, EVER.. i dont know much about hacking, but im slowly learning (mostly from mistakes). cain seems very complicated to me but thats just cause i have no clue what all it can do.

Hello,

Perhaps cracking programs isn't for you then.  If you want to learn slowly and at your own pace - why not take some free courses in how the web is designed whether it be an extranet to how databases work.  You can take online tutorials/courses online, at your own pace, at http://www.w3schools.com

You can learn a myriad of things from TCP/IP and how/why addresses are assigned to SQL to PHP to learning .NET and how each apply to one another.  Just a suggestion.

A cracking guide disguised as an html guide.  So tricky!

Cain + Abel will only find the aim pw if it is saved on the computer (remember password, etc). If you can sniff the md5 hash that it sends (if it still uses md5) and then you could try looking it up through rainbow tables.

Also, cracking wont work very well through AIM express, oscar + toc both rate you after several tries. The only method would be a multi socketed cracker which ran through a fresh proxy after several attempts. This method would also be pretty slow.
