Title: IP Addresses
Post by: Jersey on December 21, 2006, 02:46:43 PM
Hey, I was wondering if theres any way to identify the location of somebody via IP... or if theres really anything that the IP can be used for regarding information as to who/where its coming from.

Open up command line, type tracert (ip) and press enter. You'll get a general idea of where the person is.

The location you're generally going to find is where the user's ISP is located.  A nice, little service here:

...gives some nifty information with a map of the area.  However, keep in mind, it's very general.  A wireless ISP user may be in California, but the hub may show in Washington.

Cool, helpful info.
You think if I call up the ISP and maybe bs something that would give reason for them to identify the user of that IP to me?

They won't give you anything.

Find out who the ISP is and make friends with someone who works for them.

If it's a static IP, you can sometimes SE the information from the ISP.  I've done it several times before and it's worked.  I just do the 'ole "I'm in some other department, transferring a customer to you" trick.  Like, say you're in customer service, transferring a customer to technical support.  Then ask, "By the way, can you pull up an account by the IP address?"

With one, I had to get tech support to get the MAC address from the IP address.  Then they were able to pull up the account with the MAC address.  It took awhile to finally get a person to go through the trouble for me.

You can discover all sorts of things based on IP address. See the thread Taking Down a Site for what I mean. Raptor did more than just get the IP but he discovered a lot of info.

Call me retarded... but for some reason I can't find that post anywhere. I know I saw it floating around somewhere the other day but now it seems MIA to me. search isn't coming up with it either...
