What exactly is it that you want to do?  Once you figure that out, it should be easy to find the information you need.  You should read the BinRev forums (http://www.binrev.com/forums/), since they have much better information than we do.  Just scrolling through the phreaking forum there should give you plenty of ideas.

Everyone starts somewhere, but you'll need plenty of solder, a soldering iron, and maybe some schematic references if you are using them.

You will never beat the incredible detail of Cal's instructions in PLA #33, no matter how hard you try!  ;)

my across the street neighbors have been moved out since August, and thier house has been vacant ever since. I'm just dieing to crack open that TNI box and have a look. What kinds of things can you do from the "Customer side" and what is accessible from the "Authorized personnel only" side. The telco side has a long inlet for a screwdriver, and some kind of bolt at the end. I'm not sure what kind of tool I would need to get that open. I am also pretty sure they don't subscribe to telephone services from that address anymore.

You should learn about electronics first. Phreaking will be pretty incomprehensible otherwise.

Read both of them together and you'll get a lot more out of it.

Regarding TNIs: most modern ones simply have rj-11 jacks (from my limited experience with them, your mileage may vary), so you can simply plug a regular corded phone straight in. Not that you should or anything...

You could add a "line in-use light". You might be able to grab one from Rat's Hack and tear it down.
Also: I've never seen a TNI that had RJ11 jacks anywhere in it. Those would kind of defeat the purpose of making a beige box...

They constitute the majority I have seen...probably to make it even simpler for the linemen, but I haven't gone poking around them in a few years, so I'll check it out again maybe this weekend if I feel like it (this house is newer so the information would be more up to date anyways).

Any kind of light would work. I don't think you'd need to tear anything down to make current go through it.

I've never seen a TNI without one. They include them so that customers can test their own lines without calling telco folk in.

most of the boxes on my house have jacks, i have like six boxes because my house used to be a campground  ;D there used to be like two lines for each house plus the rec room. i will post some pictures up of all the boxes later. the wiring on the house is probaly as old as the house itself

Well, I guess it's just around here that they don't have jacks. Even the brand new Bell Canada ones only have pegs.

I know you could just use an LED for an in-use indicator, but that would require making sure you got one that would light only when the phone line was off the hook (ie find one with the right amperage/voltage specs) and adding a resistor somewhere if you wanted the thing to last. Easier to just find one already made.
