Title: Bridge Security
Post by: Raptor on July 27, 2007, 04:35:36 PM
Rbcp, can you make a forum that is only visible to certain users, for discussion of Room numbers to use on the voice bridge? With all the stuff thats been going on in 752, it would be nice to have a secure place to post information we don't want PDX to get at.

I like that idea.  It's really annoying with pdxusa and all the immature flooders/toners/soundboarders in 752... it makes it hard to have a real conversation.

The only problem I see is that there might be a problem with the board being too exclusive...
Title: Re: Bridge Security
Post by: Raptor on July 27, 2007, 05:04:33 PM
If a user wants to join, they can just PM the mod of the board. Then if someone is causing trouble, they can be taken OUT of the people that are allowed to see the new rooms.

Why don't you create something with PHP such as an access system that would allow people here to register and grab the latest room numbers.

Meat-phone (http://www.the-cloak.com/Cloaked/+cfg=32/http%3A//www.pdxusa.net/) could NEVER register under a different name and read those posts!

I think the only way to ensure that your room is semi-private is to organize the secret room number amongst yourselves.  Figure out which room will be it and share it with each other via PMs.  You can't expect a public bridge to be very secure though.  I do agree that we should have a mid-level secret board for talking about sort of private things.  Maybe something that people with 100 posts get access to?

That might be good, or better yet, make it 1000 Posts

Make it however many posts I have now.

Six hundred and sixty posts to get into the cone of silence it is. That works for me because I have 4 more posts than Tachyon at the moment anyhow.

nah, i felt like an ass asking for a "secret" ext number.  thanks for expanding on this topic.  This would be nice to have, but i think since we have university style t-shirts we must put someone through a frat style initiation!  ban them for 3 days, prank call them, make em lose their job, make them wait by a payphone all night and randomly call it to check, you know - phone loser university initiation.  wow, that sounds fun "Phone Loser University" :)

I don't think we should base it on the number of posts because there are people that visit the conference bridge often and don't post much on the forums.

1000 posts? Are you kidding?

I think I have a better idea: How about a conference bridge where certain people have the ability to kick callers out of the conference?  I have a conference bridge hosted on voxeo and as long as I'm logged into the application debugger when that person logs in, I can kick people out of the conference.  The number to the bridge is (360) 519-5457. (Call it from a phone that you don't mind revealing the number to because I can see it.)

If anyone knows of a better way to implement or improve this idea, or if anyone knows of a service out there that does a much better job, let me know. :)

Now I am starting to remember what we used to do on the old Defcon Vocie Bridge... PhoneTag. And I think PDXUSA should experience the PLA's First initiation in to the MeatPhone Hall of Pranks. Just a thought.

Reminds me of a few months back when there was a car that went off the left side of the road (that is, the side it doesn't normally drive on). Someone parked on the right shoulder to check on them; four people got out of the car and crossed.
Well, tried to, as a drunk driver came hurtling down the road and killed all four people before they made it.

I wasn't sure if the guy was the biggest asshole in the world or a master of irony. I'm wondering something similar about Shake'n'Bake here.

Does it make me gay if I want you to have an operation to become a woman so I can marry you? That's still straight right? I mean, you'd be a woman right? So that's still straight. I think. OMG SO CONF00ZED

How about instead of using a shitty outdated voice bridge we use a vent server so we can actually ban people?

Yo Rijil that wouldn't happen on haxor, because all you see on the pannel is NPA-XXX-XX##. just areacode & last two digits of the number. and you can stilll kick/ban people who are being unruly.

yeah but then people know I'm there, which means I have to go through all sorts of hassle to divert or go use a payphone - all of which ends up being a pain in the ass for me to just listen to a bunch of kids yacking :)

i actually have something like that at 319-741-8100. i am a moderator but i cant see your phonenumbers. If you do decide to go, the ext is 752(if that doesnt work try 526523 but 752 is better isnt it)
but i agree that there should be some kind of security on the bridge

Having post count related restrictions is a stupid idea - PMing a mod is what most forums do to let a user access a forum hidden to members, and it works.

Hey pal,
You're trying a little too hard. We appreciate that you love the community and everything but, tone it down a notch. It's not that we don't like you or understand your enthusiasm. Really we do. You're just coming off a little nubbariffic Also, you're behind a little there. I don't believe anyone's heard MeatPhone (http://"http://www.the-cloak.com/Cloaked/+cfg=32/http%3A//www.pdxusa.net/") on the bridge in a while.
   Sincerely yours,
      Lord Nod

The domain name pdxusa.net is registered under GoDaddy. GoDaddy has very strict anti-spam policies. If all of the forums that this lame company spammed reported pdxusa.net to GoDaddy's abuse department, GoDaddy will suspend pdxusa.net's domain name registration. GoDaddy will make pdxusa.net pay a hefty fee to have their domain name re-activated.

Bridge security is a joke if there isn't any way to moderate it. Even if you're exclusive to whom you give the number, once someone who isn't trusted gets it it's gameover, go find a new room and repeat. Not to mention there are only so many room numbers, so they can be scanned (but that would take a HELL of a long time).

I like the way teleconferences are set up with an admin login and a user login, all based off of an 800 number. *shrug* That would be the ideal situation. But that's never going to happen :/

Moving providers would work as long as there's some way to moderate it, otherwise it's just picking random room numbers and hoping no one else finds it. Security through obscurity doesn't really work, or only works for a short while.

It worked back in 2004, right before all the busts happened. I can't tell you how many times we moved from the old 435 voicebridge to the 'secret' or 'the super secret' or the 'jersey'. Voicebridges are fucking lame and always will be.
