Title: Keychains
Post by: rbcp on March 09, 2008, 12:40:20 PM
Seems like a PLA keychain would be a good thing to offer since pretty much everyone has keys.  I've only seen a few that I like, though.  I don't want to be cheap and just get some metal thing with PLA stamped on it.  What I really want are these:

http://www.promotionalkeychains.biz/custom-keychains-manufacturer.html (http://www.promotionalkeychains.biz/custom-keychains-manufacturer.html)

Imagine the PLA bell logo in one of those formats.  My favorites are the "Artisan Series Zinc Alloy Plated 2-D Color Filled Custom Keychains" which is the 3rd item from the top.  I would love to have those made, but it looks like I'd have to spend about $2,000 up front on them.  That's a lot of my own money to drop on them and it would take years to make it back.  I'd have to sell about 400 of them at $5.00 each.  I bet 5 years later I still wouldn't sell 400 of them.

There are other options on that page which are equally cool, but they still require $1,000 - $1,500 to get started.  Screw that.  I can probably find a page that has slightly better prices, but I doubt it would be too much cheaper.

http://www.sz-wholesale.com/shenzhen_China_products/Solar-LCD-Keychain_1.htm (http://www.sz-wholesale.com/shenzhen_China_products/Solar-LCD-Keychain_1.htm) I also like these solar powered LCD keychains.  I've seen these at giftshops.  They don't require any batteries and the image that they flash is really bright.  It's like a glossy image on paper, but it flashes or changes colors.  It's really neat.  I can't seem to find a page of these with prices right now, but I remember them being very reasonable.

http://www.laserengravedkeychains.com/keychain-flashlight.htm (http://www.laserengravedkeychains.com/keychain-flashlight.htm) Then there's a laser engraved flashlight keychain.  There's tons of styles to choose from on these and they're always priced good.  A flashlight on a keychain could be useful too.

If anyone has any comments or other ideas for keychains, post them here.  Or maybe you can find a page that has better prices or better designs.

I like the second option and have the bell then the # for the voice bridge.

The voice bridge is pretty much a completely separate entity. The URL would be better.

Ummm, if you spent $2,000 on 400 keychains and then sold them for $5 each you would not be making a profit. With inflation,if it took you 5 years to break even you'd actually have lost slightly. Not to mention the time and labor involved in shipping and handling.

It's $2,000 for 1,000 keychains.  I just meant that I would have to sell 400 of them at that price to break even.  After that, THEN I would sell the remaining 600 keychains for $3,000 and I'd be RICH!  If I worked really hard at it, I bet I could sell all 1,000 keychains in just 10 years.

Well if that's not planning for the future I dunno what is. My own mediocre attempt at humor has been highly amusing to myself.

I'd totally buy a PLA keychain just so I could keep it next to my NYPD chain.  I really like the first one and the idea of the PLA bell seems neat.  I'm not a huge fan of stuff with logos.

Can I make the request for a bumper sticker?  Cause the regular sticker I have on my car half peeled off already.

Seconded, mine didn't last 9 months on my car. The Hell System sticker has taken it's place.

http://www.pens.com/pens/Product_Detail.aspx?prod=WhistleKyChainLight&design=Design-None (http://www.pens.com/pens/Product_Detail.aspx?prod=WhistleKyChainLight&design=Design-None)  Here's a keychain that's a flashlight AND a whistle!  Maybe I could say it whistles at 2600Hz and make a fortune by selling them in the back of 2600 magazine.

RBCP should write a book about the Jonbennet Ramsey murder entitled 'if I did it', in case the keychain sales don't work out

What a great idea!  How's this for my book cover?

I'm going to start shopping around for an agent tomorrow.

I'm going to post this on phonelosers.org, in hopes that the crazy YouTube guy will use it as evidence.

You have some new material for that novel you've been writing. You know...the novel you've been workin' on? You know the the one, uh, you've been workin on for three years? You know the novel. Got somethin' new to write about now. You know? Maybe a, maybe a main character gets into a relationship and suffers a little heartbreak? Somethin' like what... what you've just been through? Draw from real life experience? Little, little heartbreak? You know? Work it into the story? Make the characters a little more three dimensional? Little, uh, richer experience for the reader? Make those second hundred pages really keep the reader guessing what's going to happen? Some twists and turns? A little epilogue? Everybody learns that the hero's journey isn't always a happy one? Oh, I look forward to reading it.

If you wanted to get some metal keychains made up at low cost, I'd suggest doing it yourself.  You can get a lot of pewter casting supplies online for fairly cheap, and have a quality product at low cost.  All you really have to do is trace the logo on a small plaster slab, carve out the relief, make your mold, and then cast them up in spent flux from botched box soldering jobs.  Simple as pie.

all you have to do to make pie is buy a crust and filling from the store, or just buy one.  NOT simple as pie...

If you don't mind my asking, Brad, I've always wanted to know something. How the hell do you make money? I mean, do you actually have a regular job or something, because there's no way PhoneLosers pays for flights to New York and HOPE tickets (not to mention the massive phone bill you must run up each month). SO TELL ME YOUR SECRET, OH GREAT BRAD!

I have a job, just like real people!  Phonelosers.org pays for itself and leaves enough over for me to mail a bunch of free t-shirts and Media DVDs to RTF to give away at HOPE.  I profit very little from PLA, if at all.

Haha, you're cool. I would +1 if I knew how.   :D

EDIT: Oh, ok. I figured it out. You just click on the "l33t" thingy. That's pretty clever, I guess.

That's not all, we've even got this crazy thing that lets you actually SEE your posts before they get sent though the tubes to the other peoples' screens! Next time, take a good long look at it until you think you're ready to try to make a real post.

I can't believe nobody has suggested PLA laser pointer keychains.  Not only are laser pointers the hot new thing all the cyber-punk kids are into nowadays, but nothjing says PLA like severe eye damage.

I'd say rather than worry about getting the PLA logo on a keychain, change the PLA logo to match a keychain you already have.  Done.

Or how about a remote control keychain (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006GD9CE?ie=UTF8&tag=gadgetgrid-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0006GD9CE)? That would be pretty awesome.

I found a place online that does laser-etched dog tags for around $5.00 and their minimum order is ONE.  So I can get a few of these and sell them on the website for around $7.00 or so.  Or you could just pirate your own from www.etchplus.com for cheaper.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Sc2M0itrsc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Sc2M0itrsc)

In the sample I got, I think the PLA logo is a little big so I'd probably ask them to shrink it a bit.  It's unlikely that I would offer custom names like the RBCP on my sample, so I need to know what you guys think I should write in place of the RBCP.  I can do different things on both side and it doesn't change the price.  I kind of like the "Cactus Cactus" thing, but I'm open to better suggestions.

Also, they offer a bunch of different colors.  Black is probably the last color I would pick, but that's the sample they sent me.  Black looks kind of like plastic, but these are metal.

I received the 12 keychains I ordered today.  PayPal $5 to rbcp@phonelosers.org if you want one.  When I put them on the PLA store page, I'll probably make them $6 or $7, so hurry up and get them cheap!  The camouflage one has been purchased already, but I will be ordering more of all of them.  Tell me what color you want when you PayPal and hopefully it will still be available.

Both sides of the keychain are identical, except one side has Cactus! and the other side has Cactus?
