I've heard of a lot of different versions of linux, i am getting ready to start and learn it, whatwould be the best version to use??
-
Debian Sid. Any problems you experience are sure to be thoroughly documented all over the internet and bleeding edge is just a fancy way of saying it's great

true Debian is amazing, so i agree.
-
Ubuntu would be better as a beginner, it's got the backbone of Debian with way more support.
Once you get linux, you should move on to Gentoo or Debian.
-
For even more idiotproofness, use Freespire.

In my opinion, Ubuntu.
-
Debian is by far the best version.
-
Ubuntu *is* debian, just a shittier version of it.
-
gentoo is the best. see for yourself.

My two favorites are Debian and Ubuntu. I like Ubuntu because it seems more out-of-the-box friendly, but that's just been my experience. However if you're looking for something thats rock solid with no B$, then Debian is great too. ;D

*cough* PC-BSD
Really, BSD is great. PC BSD is really similar to Windows and OS X, allows for one click installs, based on unix and the skills you get in PC BSD are transferable to any other linux distro.
Also, BSD driver support is great, it is a fast OS and the software available is incredible.
Trust me, ditch linux and get PC BSD.

uuhhh.. PC-BSD is okay, i used it for about 4 months, and i am not sure about the one click installs you are talking about, but you can simplky navigate into the ports directories and do make && make install and it gets downloaded and installed for you including dependencies... :) FreeBSD r0x

Did you use PC-BSD before the PBI's came out?

MINIX!
-
Windows ME equipped with Microsoft Bob is probably the best choice of OS.
-
I've been using Ark. USE ARK. Ark. The end. Ark ark ark. It's also just fun to say. Ark.
-
Ark Ark Ark...hey you're right!
-
I like Ubuntu or Kubuntu. Debian is also okay.
-
I juss got ubuntu. I cant wait to learn it!!

yeah, i have to disagree with you on that, Emerge is shite, Portage is shite, and you have to do so much configuring that you might as well write you own fucking OS from code/scratch. Gentoo is ass. even the name sucks, and i hate typing it.
-
careful there, Trev. i've never used gentoo linux, so i can't say one way or the other about it...but gentoo penguins are my very favourite kind of penguins. so...knock gentoo linux all you want, but stay away from generalizations about the word gentoo. you don't want to make these adorable little guys mad:

Gentoo is awesome, currently i'm using OpenSuSE and am happy with it as well.

well version 2.6.24-17 of the kernel came out a little while ago. that is what we a talking about right? versions of linux? Oh, you meant distributions of the linux operating system. (GNU/Linux according to stallman) Depends on what you want to do with it. For everyday desktop stuff definitely ubuntu as it will support most hardware. For servers go with debian, or one of the bsds. or gentoo or whatever. I used arch linux for a bit, if you like doing stuff manually that is a good choice and if you like wasting your life getting it to support your hardware. :'(

xubuntu
Hardy Heron ftw

xfce is such a sexy desktop environment
