Title: PLA Book update
Post by: rbcp on October 28, 2010, 03:33:09 PM
Just an update on all this PLA book nonsense...things are going great with it.  I had hoped to have it all ready by November 1st, but that isn't going to happen.  My new goal, which is a very realistic goal, is December 1st.  I hope to mail out the preorders and free copies at least 1 week (maybe 2) before announcing that the book is available.  I might get it all finished up in mid-November, but December 1st at the very latest.

I'm up to my 7th proof of the book now, which is due to arrive here in a few days.  This means I've actually read this book 6 times now, circling mistakes, fixing punctuation errors and making small improvements as I go along.  I'm so fucking sick of reading the book at this point.  Proof #6 had very few mistakes left, but I actually caught a misused "your/you're" in there which made me hate myself a lot.  It also made me glad I'm not rushing this book out so that it's more awesome when you guys get it and you don't all hurt my feelings by pointing out the numerous mistakes in it.  For the most part I feel like I'm just nitpicking with my error finding now, which is a good thing.

I'm waiting for RTF to finish up a couple illustrations.  He sent me a rough draft of one a couple weeks ago and it looked awesome.  I did one illustration myself and I'm pretty happy with it.  Plus I included an old pay phone abstract I did in the 90's which is what one of the old PLA GIFs was based on.  And there's some other fan artwork thrown around in it, by 3rdworm and some other people whose names I'm too lazy to remember right now.  If YOU would like your own PLA-themed art in the book, it's not too late to email me some.  Black and white only and there's no guarantee that I'll use it so prepare for cruel rejection.

So that's where the book is right now.  It'll most likely be available by December 1st.  I'll probably announce its availability here on the forums before I do on phonelosers.org or on Twitter and Facebook.

http://www.phonelosers.org/book/ (http://www.phonelosers.org/book/) has information on the book.

Stop caring so much about being in the book, you silly son of a bitch.  If you were playing LORD I would haunt the shit out of you right now.

PS: I hope that even if you made the book RBCP lies to you and says you didn't.  Imagine how surprised and happy you'll be when you pick up a copy and actually see your name!  See, I'm a nice guy.

PPS: I added that last postscript just in case RB says you didn't make the book you'll have a seed of doubt left and be extra crushed when you get the book and see nothing.

PPPS:  Hi!

I almost deleted Baconstrip's post when he first made it, but the forums are pretty dead so fuck it.  You still suck, BS.

I'm halfway through proof #7 and so far it's been nothing but nitpicking corrections.  And RTF promises his illustrations today.  If things continue this smoothly, you preorderers might start seeing your copies a week before December 1st.

Any ideas on what to do with all these proof copies?  I've marked them all up pretty bad with pen except for this last one.  I'm thinking Goodwill donations.

I'd love to see/get a proof.  Maybe have a contest for them or give them away to callers and such?  I'll be pre-ordering the actual book next Friday when I get paid.  Also I may be able to donate a few clams so I can get access to those secret, taboo threads that don't exist.  Naw, fuck it.  I want a shirt instead.

Has anyone tried this:
Firesheep app lets you hack Facebook, Twitter accounts

"Eric Butler, a US-based freelance web application and software developer, has just released an application on his blog called "Firesheep" that exposes the vulnerabilities of open wireless networks.

Firesheep allows a user to view and even edit the account of anyone using Facebook or Twitter while logged into an unsecure WiFi network.

According to Butler, this intrusion is possible because most websites —including Facebook and Twitter— only encrypt the user's initial login..."

I just ordered what should be the very last proof of the book!  I paid an extra $20 to have it shipped here within a couple days instead of the normal 10 days so I can start ordering real copies earlier.  I'm just going to be giving this one a quick look over and then I'll be ordering all the copies for you people that preordered.  Looks like this is all going to happen before December 1st.

Huzzah! Maybe I should go get a prepaid credit card with which to preorder a copy. Or I could just wait for someone to scan it, turn it into a pdf and upload it as a torrent.

I'll be preording this Friday (Nov.12) or is that too late for a preorder?  Not that it really matters, I'm preordering or ordering it Friday whatever the status of it is.  I can't wait to read it!  I've been pouring over all the pages I can on the PLA and RBCP's archive site and everything is entirely entertaining.  This book is going to be a hoot!

Have you thought about numbering the preorder copies so people could post their book number with where they live and such?  I know you spoke of tracking them in the secondary market but I don't recall an tracking plan for people who order them right off.

Thanks again, all.
Title: Re: PLA Book update

Friday isn't too early for a preorder.  The $10 preorder thing is good until I take down the form for it and raise the price.  Glad you're excited about the book.

I'm not going to be able to manage this tracking thing before the book comes out.  If I did, it would just delay the book further.  I might set up some kind of tracking system soon, though.  Maybe I could have a stamp made for the first 50 books that read "first edition, copy #001" then 002, 003, etc.  It'd make them special!

So another book update...I received the last proof and there was a tiny problem with it.  The copy I received was from a previous file I'd uploaded to them, even though I'd uploaded the latest file before I ordered the copy.  I don't know if that makes sense, but I'm trying to blame THEM for the screwup and not myself.  Anyway, I corrected the mistake and ordered another proof and paid the extra $20 again so that it'll get here super quick.  I should be able to order a bunch of copies this Monday, which should arrive the following Monday.  Then I'll start sending out all the preorders.

Okay, I'll try and do the stamp thing.  What should it say?  Maybe this:

PHONE LOSERS OF AMERICA
FIRST EDITION BOOK
COPY #

I'll see what I can get made at Staples.  I could stick the PLA logo on it too.  In 50 years, these numbered books will be worth BILLIONS!
Title: Re: PLA Book update

Actually what you've proposed for the stamping would be general and standard. It's pretty cool. Maybe, however, you can do the same segment with the Copy#, but get a blank line under it so you can autograph it for the pre-orders.  You don't know. You very well could make millions off of this and put the Anarchist Cookbook out of print!

But what I'm curious about because I really haven't read through the forums/care to read through/checked anything/basically been completely vacant from here for nearly a year, is how you were able to get the book published? Rather, are you funding your own printing and shipping costs? What company are you going through for this? Can I ask costs?

That sounds great!  Maybe work in cactus, like maybe "Special Cactus Edition Book" or "Cactus #"?  Then you could start a thread where folks post their cactus numbers and general info for future trackings.  The tracking may take care of itself.

I like this idea too if it isn't too much trouble.  I would certainly wait a little longer to get my copy in the mail if this were a possibility.

http://www.createspace.com (http://www.createspace.com) is the service I'm using to have the book published.  It's Amazon's in-house publishing service and there is no up front cost at all to use it other than a few bucks to send yourself proofs of your own book.  It's a really easy system to use and anyone can publish with it.  For an extra fee, you can make your books available on Amazon and available for people to order from book stores and libraries.

CreateSpace also lets you create CDs and DVDs, so once I'm done with this book thing maybe I'll make the old PLA prank call CDs available again.

This must have crept into my subconscious because I dreamt last night I got the Mildred Monday calls on vinyl and there were a bunch I had never heard on it.  It was a picture disk shaped like her head with her face on both sides but her eyes where whited out on Side B.

Spessa and I have talked seriously about putting out a 45.  Just one prank call per side.  We know it'd be pointless, but it would be cool!

Book update!  I ordered 100 copies of the book on Monday.  The delivery time is scheduled for 2 weeks, but they're always earlier than they schedule.  My guess is that I'll get the books around the end of next week and I will start shipping them out to the people who preordered immediately.  There's around 75 copies to mail and I think I can get all that done in 2 or 3 days.

I'll see about getting that stamp done for the first hundred copies this week or next.

About e-books - I will be using a service that makes the book available on all the major e-readers and the price will definitely be lower than buying a real book.  I'm not sure about DRM, but if there's DRM, I will give purchasers who ask a DRM-free PDF of the book.  I'll try and have all that ready at the same time I officially release the book to the public.

Wow, you and Spessa should keep that idea very much alive.  I think it is so pointless that is has to be done.  Have you discussed which two calls you'd immortalize on vinyl?

Just imagine the PLA sigil spinning at 45 rpm! It'd be cactnotic!

By the way, does anyone know of any phone pranks albums that were released on vinyl?  I seem to think I have something...maybe one of those old Stag 45s that have some calls on them.  I know Ted Leo and the RX took a phone prank thing from The Best Show on WFMU and turned it into a song for a split 45 with Zach Galifianakis but that is all I can think of right now.

Does or did anyone ever listen to The Best Show on WFMU?  There is a lot of very clever phone play on it, or was.  It's gone kind of downhill since about 2008.

Thanks for all the work you're doing on the book!  I can't wait to get it!

We wanted to do pranks that included me, her and Mr. Spessa all together.  I think we decided on the dealership call, where we tell a lady we blew up her car.  And then that guy in the hotel, freaking out because a front desk lady was rude to him.

By the way, does anyone know of any phone pranks albums that were released on vinyl?

The Jerky Boys came out in '92 or '93 and they were still making vinyl then so I bet their first album is out there somewhere in vinyl.  I just checked Amazon, and they have a listing for a record of JB, but it's sold out.  It was just 3 years later that Ball Busters, Tube Bar and 976-GIRLS came out, so maybe they were on vinyl too.

Thanks for the info!  I also found JB 3 on the JB site, 2LPs for $40 and it comes autographed by Johnny B or some shit.  For some reason, I think its $40 only for the autograph, not the obscureness of having JB 3 on vinyl.  I may research this and put together a list of prank call albums released on vinyl and post it elsewhere.

Oh man, and I am not suggesting you do this, just musing on the thought that the PLA book with one of those cheapo flexi-disc inserts would have been killer.  The last time I saw an insert like that was in an issue of Grand Royal back in the mid 90's.

What's a flexi-disc insert?  Like a CD-ROM included with the book?  They still put those in school books.  I'm planning to include a PLA Media DVD with every book if I can get around to burning a bunch of them before I start shipping them out.

There were/are flexible sheets of vinyl with grooves, looked just like a square 45 but you could bend it like paper and they usually only had one song per side.  They would bind them in with magazines and such as promos and they usually contained supplimentary audio material to the printed stuff.

My stamping skills could use a little work.  I fucked up the first 3 pages I tried it on, finally got it sort of right about 30 pages in.  Hopefully I don't mess up any real books.

The numbers are only going to be 3 digits long, so I'm going to use a knife to scrape the rubber off the remaining 3 digits.  I'm only going to number the first 100 books.  Where should I stamp at?  On the inside of the front cover?  On the very first page that has "Phone Losers of America" written on it?  In the middle of the book, on top of words just to piss people off?

Some books contain that weird second page. The first one that declares the title of the book inside of the book, and then another that has a lot of jibberish on it thanking people for whatever reason before they get to the index. If you book has an index, I think you should stamp it some where in there. Or if it has that first title page, then have it in there. Basically where any blotch of huge, wasted, white page is. Hell, depending if on the header of the chapters, why not on the first page of the first chapter? That'd be a fun place to put it.

If I ever get my meager earnings from my job I already lost, I'll be purchasing a copy of the book. A man needs his priorities.

As a hidden track for the audiobook, maybe you could record yourself stamping them.

That might result in blobs of ink where those scraped bits hit the paper.  An alternative way of blanking out the last numbers is to get a post-it note and stick it to the page where the unwanted digits will hit, so the post-it gets stamped and not the book.

I'm doing them in the order they were ordered from me.  I mailed out 10 today and I'm hoping to do 20 or 30 tomorrow and keep up that pace so they're all sent out this week.  Unless I run out of money to ship them, which is a possibility.

Too bad you're SO FAR down on the list, DBK!

I'm shipping everything media rate, which makes it possible that it could take 10 days to receive it.  But I think it's usually half that.  Spessa is two states away from me and she got hers in just 3 days.

I just returned from mailing out about 40 books.  The post office lady says that they should all arrive by next Tuesday, so I guess it's not likely to take the full 10 days like I said.

I was expecting the other half of the 100 books I ordered to arrive today, but they didn't so I can't work on getting those all boxed up tonight.  Hopefully tomorrow.  In any case, it looks like I will definitely have all the preorders mailed out this week, probably by at least Thursday.

I may have forgotten to include a PLA sticker with an order or two.  If I did, let me know and I'll send you one.  I've also been throwing in old issues of Phoneloser Monthly, Party 934 postcard ads and PLA/UPL business cards.  Though I think I'm going to run out of that stuff before I'm finished with all these.

Info about the book's chapters can be found at http://www.phonelosers.org/book/ (http://www.phonelosers.org/book/).  The $10 preorder price is still good, until I get around to changing the link so that it costs $79.99.

The book will be available on Kindle/Nook/Etc very soon, and I'm sure on your favorite torrent mere days after that.

Who's this RBCP guy and why would I want to read his "book" anyways?? Let me know about the ordering information though. I've been waiting to read this for a long time!

I STILL haven't received the 2nd half of my books shipment.  That'd sure suck if it got lost in the mail or something.  I ordered the 2nd shipment the day after the first, so I'm not sure why it's taking an entire extra week (so far) for them to arrive.

So 50 books have been mailed out now and I'm still waiting for the shipment so I can mail out the other 50.  I'll post on here as soon as they arrive.

So in all seriousness, did mine get shipped out yet or was it slated to be part of the fabled shipment which was intercepted by Homeland Security?

Yours hasn't gone out yet.  I was shipping them all out in the order they were received, but had to stop after 50.  I really hope the rest of them arrive tomorrow so I can send these out.  I hate that I announced that they're all being shipped and half of them haven't.

Good news everyone!  I finally got that 2nd shipment that's been taking forever to arrive.  I'll get all these stamped/signed today and I'll have them in tomorrow's mail.  Post Office Lady tells me that media mail rarely takes more than a total of 7 days to arrive, so everyone in the U.S. should get there by Wednesday, December 8th at the very latest.  Some of the ones I mailed out last week were arriving after just 2 days, but then others took the full 7.  But it was Roxy's that took the full 7 and who gives a shit about her.

I promise yours will go out tomorrow, DBK!

If you're too cheap to buy a PLA book, you should buy a book proof instead...
