Title: PLA Brick
Post by: rbcp on December 19, 2010, 11:10:30 PM
You know when something needs funding for some kind of outdoor project like a fountain or a park so they start selling bricks to people?  You pay them a certain amount and in return you get a brick on their sidewalk that will forever have your name on it.  Wouldn't it be great to have a PLA brick forever embedded into a sidewalk?

There's a place here (http://www.albanybrassring.com) in Albany, Oregon (just behind the post office from the Back chapter in the book) that is building a giant carousel that will take up a city block.  They've been at it for years now and expect the project to be completed within 5 or 6 years.  For $100, they will give you a regular sized brick that will have 3 lines of engraved text on it.  Not sure how many characters you get, but it's plenty of room to write Phone Losers of America or Cactus a bunch of times.  Maybe something that nobody else will get like Chris Tomkinson Loves Dino Allsman.

For $250 we can get a double-sized brick and write twice as much nonsense on it.  So my questions are this:

1. Is this a dumb idea to even pursue?

2. Would you be willing to donate $5 or $10 for a brick that you'll never see in real life and that won't even be visible for another 5 years, by which time you'll have completely forgotten about PLA? (God, I'm a bad salesman.)

3. What would you write on this brick?

1. Do people even read those bricks anyway? Depends on how much traffic they'll get I guess.
2. Not likely.
3. "For free hot phone sex call spacebison at 402-326-7819"  :nonsense:

PLA: The Book now available. See phonelosers.org for details."

"This brick was stolen from a local brick factory."

I'd donate, it's an awesome idea, and it simply needs to be either Phonelosers of America or Cactus ad infinitum.

I love these ideas so much that I want to buy 10 bricks.

I'll donate money and ideas for this.

I'm sure "'At 12 o'clock in the fuckin' midnight?  FUCK YOU!" (I like the slight variation he shouts the second time) is ineligible but I do much like the note on the business card "Have you ever been hopelessly harassed on the phone day in and day out for an entire year straight?"

I also like "Brad Cater Killed JonBenét Ramsey"  and "PLA: The Book now available. See phonelosers.org for details." very much.

Or it could be a memorial to Mildred Monday, maybe even an epitaph of sorts.

"This brick is better than your brick"

"This brick was made from powdered children"

"This brick contains 10% more feces than all the other bricks."

"This carousel got bricked by the PLA"

"Jesus was a PLA fag"

"This brick was fired in Dino Allsman's ass"

"This carousel is property of the PLA"

I should go in with $100 and request one that says GOD HATES FAGS, just to record them turning me down.

"I'm with stupid"

"I'm surrounded by bricks"

"Warning: Do Not Step On This Brick"

"Your ad here. Call 413-351-0111"

You should request a brick with an arrow on it. It doesn't matter which way it faces. Wait a few months after the project is finished, then start a rumor that some gold or other valuable stuff is buried nearby and there's a clue within the bricks.

Some of these ideas awesome and I officially recant my drunken angry "it needs to be PLA or cactus" comment.  A cactus one does still need to happen, though.

"The proceeds of this brick goes to the Nation Cactus Foundation."

"Line 10: Read Brick
Line 20: Read Next Brick
Line 30: Repeat"

"There is absolutely nothing to read on this brick."

"Will read bricks for beer."

"Brad Carter for President 2012."

"Who farted?"

"QYOM PWMM GYNX

It will hilarious if the CIA digs up that brick to find out what the hell the  encrypted message is.

Seems like there's enough interest in the brick for me to set up a page and try to get people to donate.  I can keep a list of all the people who donated and the amounts on the page forever so it'll be like you own part of a brick in some random town that you'll never visit!  I'll drop by that place soon and take pictures of the sample brick and any details they have on it.

Hopefully the $100 brick is allowed for a "business" name like PLA.  Maybe we can get enough donations for just a brick with the PLA name on it, then we can start trying for additional bricks with all kinds of craziness on them.

I went by the carousel place yesterday and took a picture of their sample brick.  I was wrong about our words being engraved in the brick itself.  We get a gold plaque, which is so much better!  (I think.)

I set up a page that tells about the brick and there's a PayPal button to donate.  So you people who said you'd donate better do it, you jerks!

http://www.phonelosers.org/brick/ (http://www.phonelosers.org/brick/)

I'll be putting $10 or $20 towards it, depending on how quickly the donations happen.  So really all we have to come up with is $80 at the most since I'm so generous.

Wow, a gold plaque even.  I'll put in $17 when I get paid Friday.

$11 has been donated so far.  $89 to go!  I think once it reaches $50, I'll go ahead and pay for the brick and hope that the remaining $50 is donated.

I put just $5.00 on the brick page for myself, not to be a cheapskate, but to give everyone else a chance to donate and get their names on the page.  For realz, that is the reason!  I'll put more in if donations stop happening though.

I'm in for donating to this. I've been trying to think of something witty about about throwing this brick through a window if you locked your keys in the car, locked the baby in the car, etc... the best I can come up with is "slim jim version 1 courtesy of the PLA". but it seems sorta stupid and maybe others can elaborate on this idea and make it better.

Thanks for the $50 Trevelyn!  And the $20, kingmob!  There's not much left to donate.  I'll get the brick page updated soon.

Once I get this one paid for, we can either find some other brick somewhere in the U.S. or we can get another one at this same place and write something crazy on it.

For this brick, you're only allowed to donate $21.11 or less.  Holy shit, we almost have a brick!  And WeakNet Labs (http://weaknetlabs.com) is the proud owner of half a brick!  I'll go buy us a brick soon.

http://www.phonelosers.org/brick/ (http://www.phonelosers.org/brick/)

So this one should definitely say "Phone Losers of America" on it.  Should I include the "cactus cactus" under that?

And I'm definitely going to try for a second brick, so we'll have to do some voting on what crazy thing we write on the other one.

blu3b0y donated the remaining $21.11 last week, so we now have an even $100.  We have a brick!  I will do my best not to blow this $100 on cocaine.  I'll go fill out the brick stuff later this week or next or maybe the week after that.

So I guess we can start working towards brick #2!

that might be better if there were multiple locations where bricks were located, and each brick gave clues as to where the next brick was located...
