Title: Open Security Cameras
Post by: rbcp on August 14, 2013, 11:19:17 AM
Earlier this year, Liz Darwin started collecting open security cameras and posting them to a web site for us.  People have done this before, even on these forums, but the difference is that now these security cameras are cheap enough for regular people to have in their homes.  I'm going to post the cams that are still working from her secret page and maybe we can discuss some ways to identify the cams and do some kind of pranks to them.

We can also find open cams on these websites:

http://www.opentopia.com/ (http://www.opentopia.com/)
http://www.baladacam.com/cams/ (http://www.baladacam.com/cams/)
http://www.webcamsmania.com/ (http://www.webcamsmania.com/)
http://downloads.trendnet.com/ (http://downloads.trendnet.com/)

A few cams I've managed to track down the owners phone numbers by calling their internet provider and getting it from their IP address, but that's usually pretty hard to do unless it's Comcast.  We had a cam for an old couple in their kitchen and would watch them have breakfast each morning until I called them and asked them to change the channel on the TV.  They immediately walked over to their cam and unplugged it and then changed their phone number.  I did the same to some other guy, but he was more accepting of being called by a weird stranger.

Anyway, I'd love to get some more interesting cams and get the phone numbers from them and maybe do some pranks.  Pranks where we DON'T say creepy things to a deaf 2-year-old like these people did:

My old list is mostly dead... that sucks.. use to have a pretty cool one inside an old chinese woman's house. You could move it around and one day as I moved it she looked up at me and smiled!

That's crazy! I can't believe people are stupid enough to put video cameras in their homes! Don't they ever get the urge to do illegal things in the privacy of their own home--ripping tags off of matresses, etc.?
Hopefully a few prank calls will be enough to put an end to the insanity.
You'll be doing a real public service, letting people know how stupid they are and how they can been seen by anyone on the web.

This one is cool.  I moved it away from the plants it was watching and there's an old guy taking a nap on the couch with his dogs.  I've been moving it up and down a bunch, hoping the noise (if there is any) will wake him.

So these people have kept these security cams open on purpose???

I think most of the people in their homes just never consider that outsiders can find them.  They don't understand that there are weirdos like us searching for open cams.  Maybe they think of an IP address like an unlisted phone number - their iPhone knows how to connect to it, but how would anybody else?

Hey guys so i came across this one
http://www.opentopia.com/webcam/16368?viewmode=livevideo

its a PC repair store called Friendly Computers in Georgetown, Texas.
The number is (512) 931-0303  owner's name is Bill

Even though its a computer store nobody seems aware that they are being watched on the cam. They also have a bunch of dogs roaming around the store for some reason.

I already spent like 45 minutes on the phone with them getting them to wheel that little purple car around and taking apart every wireless device in the store to try and find batteries for it (i told them i'd be willing to pay as much as 5,000 dollars for the rc car)

The lady i spoke to was quite perplexed that i could see her, i told her i was sitting in my car in the parking lot with a manilla envelope containing 5,000 dollars and my daughter in the backseat, watching through the front windows. That seemed to explain things for her.

i was eventually able convince her to push it out the door and around the parking lot (so that i wouldnt have to come inside with the dogs), looking for our car that wasnt there. People were seeing this confused lady pushing a toy car around in a parking lot with a phone against her ear and coming up and asking if everything was okay. It was pretty funny.

oh also these guys seem to have forgotten that they have an advertised live cam feed, have given them a few calls too

Ah, open security cameras.  I've been keeping a list of these (http://pastebin.com/QkLaCgw1) on pastebin, updating the list whenever I have spare time.

There's another list (http://pastebin.com/j2uaxcLv) I've been pulling from, but most of the links there are probably dead.

Someone in Jacksonville, FL (http://74.237.255.211/anony/mjpg.cgi) has a webcam on their pet rats or whatever the hell these are.

Hey Brad, do you use a VPN when you mess with the cameras?

Of course not! Why wear a condom with a hooker? The people that don't have enough sense to secure their web cameras from public perusal are not likely to be the type to garner any decent information from a log should such log even exist.

Nah, I never have.  I've only called 3 people, though, and didn't say anything that bad to them.

These are some great cameras, everyone!  Hopefully this will motivate me to try and get some phone numbers.

Ive figured an easy way to find the phone numbers if its a bussiness...look up the ip and find the generic location and then look for the bussines by type of bussiness on google maps and call it and watch if anyone in the webcam moves

There used to be a young couple cam with a dog, and a couch, and they would smoke pot and play video games. And a few times the girl would change and not close the bedroom door, and you would see boobs.  Big ones. But that cam appears to be down now.

And the ManCave man, who I caught naked one too many times. (yuck). I haven't seen his cam back up in a long time.
But invalid old people seem to be the norm. Or fat guys named Ernie, who need special chairs because sitting on a couch would kill them. Who are sooo pathetic even rbcp would be left speechless.

Have you been able to track their phone number down yet, RBCP? I can't for the life of me figure out how you found their numbers..I tried using the IP from the link, and I found an approximate location, and it had coordinates too. I typed those into google maps and the coordinates when put into the search field brought up this: 22nd Ave NE, Wymark, SK S0N 2Y0, Canada. However that's right next to a rather large place, something that looked too big to be their house; but maybe I'm wrong. Plus, not too far from that address are the suburbs..sigh. How did you go about finding their numbers?

I watched them clean the kitchen together today.  I can't wait for breakfast with them in the morning!

I should have explained better about tracking them from their IP in the video.  It's not something where you can just type their IP into a website and get any real information about them.  I used a website to find out who their internet provider was, then called the internet provider and tricked them into giving me the information.  I don't even know how to explain how I did that, but I told a rep. I was calling from a different department and got her to pull up by the IP address.  That method won't work with most internet providers, but it works with theirs and with Comcast.

I sat and watched Brad's Canadian couple for a bit last night. Mr. Irene was shirtless and appeared to be trying to fix the television as Irene looked on. I've been trying to wrap my head around why they would turn the camera back on but can't for the life of me figure it out. Maybe they really think Brad hacked them rather than just used a firmware exploit?

The Asian lady has to be in an assisted living facility. That's almost exactly what my grandmother's room looked like when she lived in one. The family probably installed a camera to keep tabs on her, not realizing that people around the world can watch her as well.

I've been watching this German office:

http://193.138.213.169/CgiStart?page=Single&Language=9

I can't for the life of me figure out what it is but there was someone on the computer until around 5:00am German time. The great thing about this is you can move the camera around, and there is some freaky stuff in this room, like a doll right below the camera.

What website did you use? I use whatismyipaddress.com and it gives me a bunch of information, including the internet provider. It's a lot easier to track down businesses.
Do you have any idea if there's any other way to track them down besides sweet talking the rep?

I just type in "reverse IP address" into Google and use one of the first few results.  All I really need to know is the name of the internet provider.  I don't know of any other ways to get information other than talking to a rep.  There must be other ways, though.

Irene has been MIA all day.  Her husband not only had to make his own lunch, but he did the dishes too.  In his purple pants.

She's on now, and wearing a purple hat and a pair of Capris. She must have had a wild day out today.

I tried moving it around a bunch, and I finally got the guy to look at the camera. He just kinda smiled and looked away, though.

I'm convinced at this point he knows he's being watched. Besides the creepy doll being positioned right by the camera, he kind of came right up to the camera and gave this creepy smile when he signed off his computer last night. Which makes me even more curious who the hell he is.

Yeah the German guy definitely knows he's being watched. He just waved at me when I started moving his camera around.

A couple years ago, 4chan's /b/ board found that camera, as did /x/.  The people at that office are well aware they are being watched.

Is anyone else having problems getting these URLs to load today?  I can't get any of them to work.  The Irene Television channel on UStream is down, too.

FTC: Webcam Company’s Lax Security Led To Invasions Of Privacy (http://consumerist.com/2013/09/05/ftc-webcam-companys-lax-security-led-to-invasions-of-privacy/)

Looks like the FTC is whacking TRENDnet on the nose with a newspaper and saying, "Nnnnnooo!  Nnnnnnnnnooooooooo!"

RBCP i think you should remove the link to the toddler cam, i just saw him running around the room naked. My own mediocre attempt at humor has been highly amusing to myself.

I can never connect to the kitchen cam anymore.  Is it still working 24/7 for everyone else?  I've tried various times throughout the week, but it won't connect.  Maybe they blocked my IP address.

Yeah, a lot of the cams get taken down, or get turned off for a time.
Irene's kitchen cam is back on right now.  There is a "Get Well Soon" balloon in the kitchen. Oh nos!
