Title: PLA: The Book
Post by: GreyFox on May 22, 2006, 01:12:59 PM
I just finished reading PLA: The Book (located here (http://www.phonelosers.org/book.html)) and I really like it.  RBCP, have you considered writing some more?  Maybe publishing?

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!  I pretty much scrapped that project.  There's some more written on it that I never put on the page which maybe I'll stick up there one of these days.  Or maybe I'll actually finish the entire thing someday.  As of now I don't have plans to.

I did start another book project, though, and it's nearly completed.  It's more in short story format and includes many of the old PLA issues, stuff from phonelosers.org and stuff from my homepage.  I have a few different published friends now who seem willing enough to help me get it published one way or another.  And if none of that pans out, I'll take the Mentally Incontinent route and self publish it.

I demand to have PLA: The Book (Version by CountyKid) somewhere in the book. Maybe in the foreword. Or possibly as part of a chapter.

Okay fine, if I can't get that. Then a Thank You in the thank you's section.

There were some guys on the bridge a while back who were going to write a book on the phreaking community.  I filled them in.  I don't know if anything ever came of it.

I remember that... I think they were the fuzz.  OK maybe not the fuzz  but they were really weird.. weirder than the normal weirdos that hang out on the bridge.

Is there any chance you could possibly upload them some where in a zip file so those of us with a genuine interest can have a read? Because I'd download it and take up precious bandwidth on your server just to show my gratitude.

Rather than hijack the "what are you reading" thread, I'm going to post this here.  I'm really good at bringing up old threads today.  I've been putting more effort into the book thing lately.  I know I've been saying "it's coming soon" for a few years now, but I think I really mean it this time.  I've been talking to some published friends and literary agents, getting advice and trying to move forward with all this.  I get obsessed with so many little projects of mine that I occasionally forget about the book thing.  But I really do need to make it happen soon, before books become obsolete.

It looks like the last time I updated this thread, I said that I'd scrapped the story idea based on that chapter that I'd put up.  Instead I worked on a book of short stories, all based on PLA issues, my homepage and other phonelosers.org things.  That version is pretty much done but I don't really like it.  So I'm moving in the other direction now, taking those chapters and fitting them around a story based on that first chapter.  In my opinion it's working out pretty good even though I think I'm horrible at writing actual stories.

The URL to keep an eye on is this one:

http://www.phonelosers.org/book/ (http://www.phonelosers.org/book/)

I'd rather not send anyone all of the unfinished chapters, but I do promise to try and throw up another chapter or some other kind of information on there soon.  If I don't, feel free to reply to this thread and bug the hell out of me about it.

If you do make an honest effort and actually get your works published, I'll buy the book and spread it around. I'll be that prick who drops the name of an unknown author of an unknown book in the middle of the debates of Harry Potter versus Star Wars thread.

'cause, let's admit it; what you wrote for that first chapter/short story/introduction did catch a lot of our attentions. Now while I'm watching trev's videos and doing math work for college, I'll be reading what you've got written.

This is my only day off this week. I need to do everything at once.

Did the same thing. Pretty sweet read rbcp.
I was excited since I just bought the 2600 book and I saw the post and thought there was a published PLA book. One day there should be, even if it is just a log of crazy shit that the members of the site pulled off. Probably an anonymous log is best :-)
Title: Re: PLA: The Book
Post by: rbcp on June 03, 2010, 09:58:10 PM
Every 18 months or so I need to post in here and make false promises, mostly to myself, that the book will be finished up any day now.  So here it goes...

The book is more or less done.  I reverted back to doing the version where it's just separate chapters of PLA material.  No storyline to follow, no plot.  I'm not even going to try using a real publisher anymore.  I'm going to use one of the many online services that takes your money and creates a print-on-demand book that can be ordered from stores, libraries, Amazon and even read on Kindle and the iPad.  The best part about not using any real publishing channels is that this can all be written for people who like PLA instead of for the general public.  I can throw in obscure PLA shit in there and not care that a bunch of people won't get it.

And this will be the reason for the delay this time.  While there's enough book here to just be finished with it, I'm going to hold off and add some more stuff into it.  Maybe the BNF and Richard Cardo fiasco if I can manage to make that not completely boring, maybe some of our April Fools pranks, maybe forum/phone mobs.  I don't know, but I'll comb the websites and find some good stuff to put in.  I'm thinking I can have it ready sometime this summer.  At the very latest, before this year is over.  That's the goal.

RTF is writing a foreward for it and Spessa is proofreading it all and calling me stupid a lot.  I'm putting inspirational quotes from PLA people, taken from this thread (http://www.phonelosers.com/index.php?topic=236.0), at the top of each chapter and could use some more of those if anyone wants to post them into that thread or this one.

Currently the book includes the Dino story, a chapter on call forwarding, another on credit card fraud, the Fred Meyer thing, a PLA bio, red boxing, revenge, eBay, the McDonald's sign prank, Celina beige boxing, the 7-Eleven stuff, and some other things.  It's not just copied text from the web site - most of it is stories based on the web pages and PLA issues.

You guys should tell me what else you want to see in the book.  What's your favorite part of the web site that you'd like to see somehow converted into a chapter?  I need advice!  There's so much shit on phonelosers.org and the other sites that I'm sure I've forgotten some of it.  Any ideas that I can steal and not give you credit for would be really helpful.  Thanks!

I will.  I'm going to turn /book/ into a companion site for the book since there are pictures, videos and other things to go with most of the stories.

Just put a whole lot of http://www.notla.com/travels/ (http://www.notla.com/travels/) in it and rename it Catch Me if You Can 2: Brad Carter.

Entice enterprising readers with promises of high-adventure and political subversion of corporations/government (depending on advertising region) and then bore them with complicated phreaking that doesn't work anymore.

I updated http://www.phonelosers.org/book/ (http://www.phonelosers.org/book/) a couple days ago with the official chapter list.  The descriptions aren't all complete and some are missing, but I'll finish that up soon.  All the chapters listed there are completely done.  You could say the book is finished, but I'm still working on a few things to add to it.  Like the BNF/Richard Cardo thing, though I'm still unsure if it's possible to even make that interesting enough to include.

I plan to turn the /book/ page into a companion for the book, where each chapter will have links to video, sound, pictures and links to original sources for the content.

Rob T. Firefly is writing a foreward to the book, which I'm sure will be as awesome as everything else he does.  Spessa is my official copy editor.

Now that you see what will officially be in the book, what other PLA stuff do you want in there?

How about a chapter in there about Tannest. I believe she was the one who got uppity about postings to a message board about the Jon Benet Ramsey case. Maybe tie it in with the Richard Cardo saga.

A chapter about Curtis Lee Jones and how that story came about.

About Fred Meyers, is there any recordings of the PA system prank?

I think it's all more or less in there.  I never kept much of that a secret.  While the "travels" section of my homepage isn't in there, most of the stuff from that page is either in the Homelessness or the Credit Card Fraud sections.  And thrown around in other parts too.  It'll be very confusing and hard to follow.

I would like to include the Love & Rockets thing, but recent events lead me to believe that my dead friend is actually alive.  I might end up having to compensate him if I use that story.

I'm trying to decide if whether I completely love this cover design or completely hate it.

It's not done, of course.  There will be a little more text on it, in the black spot and possibly another "ad" section with text on the left side.  Some of the bottom will be chopped off to fit the 5 1/4" x 8" book size.  I'm thinking the entire back of the book will be that silver metal with holes stuff like you see around the pay phone and all text will be enclosed in advertisement frames like you see on real pay phones.

What do you think?  Some brutally honest opinions would be great!

All that grid stuff along the sides looks stupid on the book, so I'm going to zoom in the pay phone a little, which will cut off even more of the bottom.  Needs more pay phone!

I put a new thingie on the left side to give people an idea of what it's about.  If anyone can think of something better to write over there, I'm open to ideas.  All these pieces I'm adding are from different pay phones that I photographed all over Albany a couple weeks ago.

The Rob Vincent thing isn't formatted yet, but I guess this is a good time to mention that RTF is doing the foreword.

It's not possible to set up preorders through the service I'm using.   You can preorder through me if you really want to though.  If you order from any online vendors, the book is going to be $12.99 plus whatever they charge for shipping.  I was planning to offer the book to forum members for a total of $10.00 which would include the shipping.  This way I can include a PLA sticker with your book and even sign it if you want me to.  So if anyone wants to preorder from me, PayPal $10 to rbcp at phonelosers.org.  You're likely to get your book a day or two earlier than when it's available to everyone else.  I promise not to be a flake and forget to send it.

I wanted a pay phone in its natural state.  If I wanted a shiny, clean pay phone, I could have photographed the one hanging in my dining room.  I even photoshopped scratches all over the "adventures in" ad on the left side so it would match the state of the phone better.  I'd prefer a picture with soda cups and other garbage inside the pay phone stand, but then all the text would be too small.

no.. i think it is better with the phone in its natural state.. it is not a professional telecommunications information manual, if it was something like that, then i would expect the phone to be brand new/shiny...

i would think that a photo of a payphone like the one that i attached would make an awesome cover as well

I set up a preorder button at http://www.phonelosers.org/store/ (http://www.phonelosers.org/store/)

Yesterday I went to the post office to take some more pictures of that same pay phone for the cover and it was gone.  Just a week after I photographed it, they took the stand and everything.  It sucks because there's only one other outdoor Qwest pay phone like that in this city.  The number of pay phones in this city has been cut in half over the past 2 years.  Pay phones are so doomed!

Not at first, unless someone scans the entire book in and turns it into a PDF.  I'm hoping to put off piracy for as long as possible, but it will be available as an ebook on all the major readers and I'm sure there's an easy way to convert those to PDFs.

Quit making fun of my design skills!

Here's a video of the book.  Because nothing is more exciting than a video of a book.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcyMf7UkSic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcyMf7UkSic)

I still need some short quotes for the top of the chapters.  Like 4 or 5 more.  The quotes should be about the PLA, like how PLA changed your life or got you arrested or what PLA means to you.  Post them in here or email them to me.  Don't make me resort to making shit up!

Also, if anyone wants to submit some artwork for the book, that would be awesome.  There's 3 illustrations already, by RTF, 3rdworm and some other guy.  http://www.phonelosers.org/book/ (http://www.phonelosers.org/book/) has a list of most of the chapters, so you should make something related to that content.  I may have to reject your art if I don't think it'll work in the book, so prepare to feel suicidal when I tell you I can't use it.

Oh, and can you personalize the books?

What, like sign them?  Sure, I can do that.  Most of the preorders have told me to sign them.  I'll probably be a dick and sign over some text so you can't read it, though.

I still need some short quotes for the top of the chapters.  Like 4 or 5 more.  The quotes should be about the PLA, like how PLA changed your life or got you arrested or what PLA means to you.  Post them in here or email them to me.  Don't make me resort to making shit up!
Hey you crazy kids, get out of my tni box!

Nothing has changed my life more than the PLA. Reading tons of uninformative and useless articles while listening to RBCP ramble on about irrelevant topics in the phone-show has wasted my life. I have gained over 270+ pounds while sitting here at the computer but I must admit, I owe it all to the PLA.

Nobody has yet.  So far I've deleted around 500 messages of people pressing touch tones.

I still need some short quotes for the top of the chapters.

Here's one that is a parody of the famous court room line in A Few Good Men, when asked "Do you want the truth".

"Son, we live in world with payphones which are slowly disappearing, and those payphones have to be hacked by phreakers with red boxes. Whose gonna hack it? You? You Lt. murd0c? I have a greater knowledge of phreaking than you could possibly fathom.

You weep for the payphones, and you curse the PLA. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing the leet hacking skills I know. That redboxing payphones, while tragic, probably saves you money on long distance calls.

And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves a few quarters at the payphone.. You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about on the phone show.

You want me on that redbox, you need me at that payphone. We use words like third party billing, cactus, phone mobbing. We use these words as a backbone of a life spent defending free phone calls.

You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a phreaker who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very long distance tricks I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said ibaibaibaibaiba, and unplug your bud box, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a redbox, and hack a payphone. Either way, I don't give a damn what COCOT you think you are entitled to."

SHORT quotes!  That's good stuff, though.  Wish I could use it, but I'm just using quotes that are a couple of lines long.  Giant quotes would look weird as chapter headings.  I think I need just 2 more and then those will be done.

haha I just did that. I'd never used Skype4Py before so it took a while, but i've got something basic down. It dials, waits a certain amount of time, then enters a code. I have to manually listen and stop it because I have no idea what it will do when it gets the code right and I don't wanna incorperate something that will detect tones because I'm lazy.

i was not able to find the manual for this particular unit - which is linked in the post above me.. but i did find a manual of a nearly identical model the other day. did not keep a link...

but you need to read the 2nd bullet point for how to access the machine remotely...

you have to wait until after the OGM then the beep to enter the remote access code... i am sure this info will help some of you who may have been attempting to enter the code by pressing * or # during the OGM...

i was not going to post this info, but since i gave up, i figure this might help someone, since it has not been announced that anyone has cracked it yet... especially since thefinn93 decided to post the manual up for everyone...

I can't believe nobody's gotten it yet.  People have been trying nonstop since I put it up.  I was going to post the manual when I first made a post about it, but decided to hold off and hoped that people would think to download the manual themselves.  Maybe the next machine I put up will be a 2 digit code.

I can't seem to reach the machine. It goes to the MagicJack voicemail after several rings, but it's been doing this for the last few hours. Does this mean someone succeeded? Or that something's wrong?

i dont think that there is anything wrong with that, but i was holding off to give out info, because people should try to find their own way to crack the VMB - but since it has been a while i guess people should try to help each other out now...

It either means someone else is calling the machine nonstop trying to hack it, or the machine is full.  It was probably full, since I just now emptied it.  It only holds 99 messages, regardless of length.

You wouldn't necessarily have to brute force 999 times.  Some machines will ignore incorrect numbers and only listen for the correct ones.  I don't know if that's how this machine is since I've never tried to hack it.  Maybe not since it's a relatively new model.  I'll try to pick an old shitty machine from Goodwill next time.

i forgot the old article where it explained how to brute force VMB systems like that, but i tried 123456789011223344556677889900... not sure how far it got before the system kicked me out tho... so either that method will not work... or i did it wrong, i think that i might have done it wrong, but i also do not think that it will work... (i actually think that article is on the PLA page somewhere)

Latest book cover:

Probably the only real difference is the dialing instructions on the bottom.  I changed the color of Dial & Save, but I still hate that part and really need something better to put there.  Maybe a picture of a quarter or something?  Or the secret code to dump all the money from a pay phone?  Too bad my Photoshop skills are so limited or I could just shorten that whole sticker so I wouldn't need to put anything there.

In another day or two, I'll receive proof #5 of the book and I'll have to read the entire thing again. (I'm so sick of this book at this point)  Jammie is kicking ass with her copy editing skills.  RTF sent me his foreword and it's awesome.  I'm waiting on a couple illustrations from him too.  The book is now 301 pages.  No promises, but I think it's likely that it'll all be done by November 1st.  I might hold off on making it available for a few extra weeks after that so I can mail out all the free copies, preorders and contest winners first.  (Hint, hint, preorder (http://www.phonelosers.org/store/) now!)  But yay for being finished ahead of my promised Winter release.

I think I need one more quote still.  Sorry, but I didn't use yours since it didn't have anything to do with the PLA.  That was funny, though.  I hope you changed their outgoing message to that message.

Well it sort of does...I've always loved making prank calls, but it wasn't  until I found the PLA site back in '03 that I started to try to hack into answering machines and vmb's. So the PLA is pretty much responsible for my endless hours of brute force attacks on helpless phones of people througout the country! :D
