This morning I look out my front room window and see an AT&T truck pull up in front of my house.  I jump up and go to the window to see what he was doing.  He goes to my neighbors TNI box and attaches this box to it...  and leaves.

This page says it's worth $295.00.  He must have drove to a nearby telco can or pole to locate the tone.

yeah i walked up the block and seen him around the cornor up a pole beating on the cables.  He was looking pretty pissed.  I really wanted to unhook one of the clips and see how many times he would come back and put them back on.  But I was nice  ;)

THAT WAS ME!  I KNOW IT!  I hacked into this system but I didn't know what it was so I typed MONEY into it and next thing I know a phone guy in Texas is beating on the wires!

hey what do they use milliwatts for?? i always thought the lineman would dial a milliwatt from a residence's tni and go look for it on the pole or in a can.  but why would he want to do that if his company is willing to buy him an awesome kick ass tone generator like that yin??  damn.

I was talking with a friend and from my understanding, milliwatts are intended to be used for line loss/quality measurements in conjunction with frequency meters/testers. there are also tone sweeps that can be used to measure frequency response. Toners are intended to be used for tracing pairs when you need to isolate or locate a pair in a residence, cross-connect (junction box), at a splice on a pole, etc...  Toners are used in conjunction with an induction probe that can detect the tone to identify the selected pair.
