Walkie Talkie Mods?
« on: November 13, 2006, 07:08:27 PM »
Sorry, but I'm just curious.

What I was wondering if a few things:

Are there any walkie-talkie mods out there? I've tried googling, but I just found things to the effect of "walkie talkie watch mods" and such.  Not the...good kind.

Also, on the note of modding, I wondered if I could isolate the frequency of a walkie talkie using my scanner, if I could in turn some how figure out the channel it's operating on and use my walkie talkie to er, get on  the channel too.

Basicaly, if there's anything fun to be done with walkie talkies.

Check mods.dk for your modding needs.

Also, try googling the make and model number to see if there's anything interesting on them.

Also x 2, most devices that transmit list the frequency that they transmit on somewhere on the device in accordance with the FCC.  So if you're trying to find out what channel your walkies are transmitting on, look all over the device, including inside and underneath the battery cover.  By law, it should say it on there somewhere.
May the forces of evil become confused on the way to your house.

Post the type of walkie talkie it is here.  Maybe somebody here will know what frequencies it transmits on and if there are any worthwhile mods for it.

I got a Uniden BC72XLT NASCAR scanner (it was probably extremely overpriced, but the local store only had two models and I was desperate) and so far I'm pretty disapointed with it, but I'm probably doing something wrong. I scanned the whole frequency range in the local mall to get some security walkie talkie stuff but had no luck and I can't even get the police regularily though I did one time. Any suggestions from the 1337 scanner folks for a n00b?

Which range did you scan?  0mhz - 899mhz?

Your mallcops will likely be in the VHF or UHF business band (130mhz-175mhz and 430mhz-475mhz or nearby, I think).

Around here, at least, the business stuff tends to be in the 150mhz and 450mhz range.

They need to actually be talking for you to hear it, so you might have scanned over the frequency when it was dead.

You might try looking here:

wireless.fcc.gov/uls

Click Licenses, then click "Advanced License Search".

Select "IG" and "IK" under service group, and then enter the name, city and state of the entity you're looking for.  Try being a bit general on the name - for example, the local mall here is "Heritage Mall Shopping Centers" or some such crap.  In this case, you'd just search "Heritage".

Leave the rest of the search options as they are.

If it finds a record (or records), it'll list them.  Click on the Callsign link, and then click the Frequencies tab.  That'll display what they're licensed (or what they were licensed) for.

You can also do the same thing to search for local drive-thru frequencies, but that's a bit more hit-or-miss.  Sometimes they're licensed under the franchisee name instead of the restaurant name, and sometimes they're licensed under a different location.

The ULS search is by where the license is held, not where the transmission location is, so if you've got a larger franchise, the licenses might be in another state.

if your looking specifically for mallcops you can skip 144-148Mhz 222-225Mhz and 430-450Mhz,  those ham bands. Mainly locals ragchewing on repeaters & getting away from the handful of morose code only fiends.  Though sometimes can pickup useful tidbits as the ham exams still do have a bunch of electronics related question these guys (and too few women) should at least know something.

Come to think of it, if you can hit some of the hamfests in your area, do so.  Good way to not only get info but quite often can get scanners for a lot less and without the overpriced idiot nascar sticker.  Note, I'm not bashing nascar itself just the overpriced tard marketing scams

I consider walkie talkies to be the kind of 2-way radios I used as a kid. Most of those operated in the CB band so any linear amplifier that covers that band could work if you modded the walkie talkie so it can be hooked up to one. I just saw a Cobra 18 at walmart for $40 it make more sense to pickj something like that up.

GMRS/FRS radios can be amplified as well with the proper amplifier hooked up to it. When you buy a GMRS/FRS radio buy one with a BNC style connector for the antenna and not a fixed one. Then you can buy an adapter for the standard coax and hook it up to an antenna. J-Pole antennas give great performance on the GMRS band. http://www.hamuniverse.com/jpole.html You can find the basic instructions for building one and a calculator at that link.

Mmm, I suspect that most of the old walk-talkies that kids had back in the 80s where 49mhz.  Just a hunch based on the number of cordless phone conversations I heard...
