Bad Habits
« on: October 29, 2007, 08:13:30 PM »
Dear Jammie,

Throughout the years I've picked up some bad habits.

I never comment my code for anyone other than myself.
I can't ever remember all the exact technical terms for what I'm talking about,
partly because I'm not learning so that I can dazzle others with my knowledge,
and partly because most of the things that I've studied have been mere stepping
stones toward a more refined goal that I have.

Though I think it's cool to be all 1337 and shit, I'd much rather accomplish the tasks
that I've laid out for myself.

Throughout the time that I've grown to embrace hacking as a way of life my goals have changed directions, more times than I can count. The shear mass of information that I've had to digest over the years, the emotions that go into each little project, the feeling that you get when you realize that you just wasted 2 days RTMFing just to find out that your in the wrong spot totally. etc.

Anyhow, through it all, I've made a system that works for me.
And as a result, a system that doesn't work for anyone else.
I've already encountered being misunderstood a few times on phonelosers when it seems that I 've worded everything correctly. I'm afraid that my abilities are being stymied by my inability to effectively communicate.

This really isn't a way for me to boost my ego. I swear.

Do you have any suggestions that might help me to communicate more effectively, while leaving out
the perpetual quest for cheap 1337ness that is sometimes displayed around the scene?

Btw, if this doesn't make much sense to you it should be a good example of my problem.

Thanks

P.S.
My post in Is It Worth It, is a good example of the misunderstanding that I'm talking about.
It seems to me that my post clearly was not asking for advice on how to commit a crime, yet it was construed as though I was. Clearly I was wondering if going into the C.O. was worth it, and I posted that I was looking for a way around this. I was allegedly asking for advice on how to commit a crime even after I posted that I would take my dad's RFID access card and walk in. No advice needed on how to do that.
Maybe it's my sentence structure?

Maybe it's not your sentence structure at all. You were asking HOW to get around security safeguards and how to avoid prosecution. That's the same as asking how to commit a crime. If you were asking "What trouble will I get in if I get busted?" or "If anyone else was in this situation, would they find it worth the risk?" then I would have kept the topic. Instead, you asked how to minimize the risk, which I'm not here to help you do. You want to access systems and/or locations without permission, great. PM somebody about it, or post it in one of the "member only" boards it doesn't show up on page indexing services/etc.

I don't dislike you, Cricket. You just need some common sense.

PS. I don't comment code unless it's something that someone else did for me or if I have multiple redundant lines without a suitable anchor for searching.

Maybe it's not your sentence structure at all. You were asking HOW to get around........

I'm confused.

Clearly I was wondering if going into the C.O. was worth it, and I posted that I was looking for a way around this.

But that wasn't clear at all. You were looking for a way to acheive your objective without going to the CO, right? A reader needs to know that objective in order to help. For all anyone knew you were looking for a way to hit on the cleaning lady.

It's not sentence structure, it's lack of context. Unfortunately everyone I know who has this problem has a really tough time getting things across. Good luck.

PS- Commenting code only for yourself is fine if you're the only one using the code. Being organized is not an end unto itself, it is only a means of improving something else. If no one else needs to understand the code then you're wasting your time commenting it for other people.

Cricket, as I said before, I don't dislike you. Thanks for your offer to help me w/ my work situation.
