well 2day i was at a guitar center in Warwick RI, and some dumbass tried to steal a new ibook pro even tho it was screwed down to the counter, so while they were running after the idiot i found a nice little list of phone #'s for various credit card companies along with the guitar centers merchant number for the specific companies (i am not sure if these are only for the one in Warwick RI or all guitar centers in the US) not really sure what i can do with these they are all 1-800 or 1-866 numbers.

I have the phone number and merchant # for American Express/Optima (All sales) , Discover (all sales), Telecheck (retail and all cashier checks), Visa/Mastercard (retail sales only). I have not tried calling any of these because i am to much of a pansy My own mediocre attempt at humor has been highly amusing to myself. (THE SUBJECT MATTER OF THIS POST IS CAUSING ME TO LAUGH OUT LOUD BECAUSE IT'S SO FUNNY.  SERIOUSLY, I'M LAUGHING.  OUT LOUD.) (whats the best way to call a phone number anonymously? i know the restricted trick crap but other than that what is there?) if you would like the phone numbers and merchant numbers PM me and il be happy to give them to you.

(I found the numbers taped to the computer behind the cashiers desk, so if these are not numbers for all guitar centers in the US thats where you might find the numbers for your local GC)

I don't know if this is useful to you guys (and girls) at all but figured theres no harm in posting it

i add to the list: payphones and beigeboxing.

plus i bet if you call them up you'd get a data signal(like a internet or fax when it connects)

uhh.. what did you do to get those numbers? as soon as there was commotion you decided to run behind the counter and look for them? don't you think, even though guitar center is a piece of piss, they would have security footage of you doing that?

you just call up the phone number and when they ask for the merchant # give them the one that goes along with the credit card company you called and then gather the info. not the most useful or amazing of #'s but its good for background info on someone. And i scouted the place out for security cameras and the cashiers desk i was at didnt have one because if was only for a very small part of the recording section.

All these are good for are voice authorizations.  They're typically used when the CC machine returns a code like "Call Center" or when the machine is down altogether.  In the first case, they'd try to put the transaction through manually and then tell you that you need to take the card, keep the customer there while they call the police because it's stolen, tell the customer it's denied, etc.  For voice authorizations, they take the card number and the amount and issue an authorization number like the CC machines do.  I believe this just places a hold on the account for the amount authorized.  Typically the numbers are entered into the POS and the system later sends the authorization numbers back to the CC servers to turn into sales.  You could probably request this by voice, too, although I've never had to do this.  Things could be different now as I haven't worked in retail for over a decade....  If you do this, you could at least max out someone's card temporarily until the authorization comes off.  If you managed to turn it into a sale then the money goes into the account tied to the Merchant ID.  Of course it probably wouldn't stay there for long and get charged back.  If you try to do it for any serious amount of money they could want to speak with the customer and verify some account details before they put it through.
