This would have been before flat rate long distance was common and before cellular phones really caught on. I got my first cell phone in 2000, but I don't think it even had free nights and weekends back then. I was paying around 5 cents per minute for long distance with Lightyear Communications, which was an awesome deal at the time. I made a lot of work-related calls and my phone bill would often reach a few hundred bucks per month. Unless you call international, it's pretty hard to run a home phone bill over $100 in a month now.
These were also the days before making phone calls via the internet was possible. No Skype and no Tinychat. Nightly PLA conferences were set up illegally, using business conferencing services such as Sprint. People would either beige box into a line and set them up from there or they would use a stolen credit card. Everyone figured it was safe to call into the conference as long as you didn't use the host pin. Most people, myself included, still diverted through the operator though.
Long distance used to be a big deal!
