Apparently they're making the shoes from Back To The Future 2. FUCK YOU, NIKE. YOU FINALLY WIN AGAINST THIS SHELL OF A MAN.

Here's the announcement video for it:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/eihSPj9lSMw&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/eihSPj9lSMw&rel=1</a>

Notice that we get FOUR different camera angles of just a single side of the shoe.  What's on the other side?  Why aren't they showing it?  My theory is that that's where the laces are that you have to tie.  The description in that video touts the LED lighting, but not power laces.  This is probably because there are no power laces.  Basically this is just a shoe with lights in it, like you've seen little kids running around in for the past 10 years.

If these shoes were really that awesome, they'd be selling them instead of making cryptic videos and only selling 1,500 of them to the highest bidder.  I bet the winners will be disappointed, unless they were just looking for a neat movie prop.

Hey look, another video where they refuse to show one side of the shoes!

You know, I could totally make shoes with laces that pull up just like the ones in the movie. How much do you think people would pay for something like that? Two, three hundred bucks? Shit people pay insane cash for ugly shoes that just cover your feet and you have to lace those up yourself.

Whatever they pay, which assuming the quantity is limited, will be out the ass. This man, however, will pay you top dollar. Top dollar being a hundred bucks, for shoes that lace and tie themselves.

And I didn't notice they were only showing one half the shoe at all until arby pointed it out. Talk about a dream crusher.

The shoes are all up on eBay now and I saw some of them going for around $8,000 a pair.  The auction states that they're not for wearing.  They're something you're supposed to put on display, I guess, though they do have them in various sizes.  The charge only lasts 4 hours, which is really shitty considering little kids shoes last for years.  Of course, their shoes blink instead of staying on all the time.  I'd laugh at someone who had to charge their shoes every day.

The auction shows both sides of the shoe and there's not a bunch of D-cell batteries like I suspected.  You can see that they're tightened by velcro, though.  VELCRO!

Here's a guy that has actually made self-lacing shoes:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/k_Efr2TaEPo&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/k_Efr2TaEPo&rel=1</a>

I noticed a few people on blogs mention today that Nike filed a patent for self-lacing shoes, so maybe we'll see them someday soon.  That one video suggests we'll see them in 2015.  Personally I don't give a shit though.  I'll just keep wearing my socks with sandals like I always do.

ugghh.. ridiculous. I could see maybe putting the original shoes from the movie on display, if you're a movie dork, but $8000 on some recreations and then displaying it as art? Retarded...

It's for charity. Rich people love to put things on display and say "Someday nobody will shake, thanks to me!"

Here's a nice mini-documentary about the shoes:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/Llb_q-JkuKI&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/Llb_q-JkuKI&rel=1</a>

They keep bringing up how they'll have power laces in 2015.  If that really happens, would any of you buy them?  I doubt I would since I'm a cheapskate and don't care about shoes.  But that'll be really cool to start seeing people wear them.  Maybe they'll have piezoelectric charging perfected by then so they can be self-powered.

I'd just recommend double knotting your laces just tight enough to slip your foot in and out of your shoes without them being so loose that they fall of.

you shouldn't have to think about lacing up your shoes unless you're wearing knee high docs or converse.

Never could stand to do that. Sure, I mean, I'm an incompetent adult who ties his shoes bunny ear style, but I prefer that over double knotting and turning shoes into slippers.

doubleknot works great for my steel toe work shoes (i do computer work, but they'd look like dress shoes if i polished 'em).  they don't slip off and i still can run in them while in a doubleknot slip on fashion.
