Did you use a 6.5536 MHz crystal out of a toaster to hack it back then like we do today?

Hi Kevin,

With the Yaesu VX-8R, you can do a mod to wideband that fucker and get on the drive-thru frequencies, as long as you know what frequencies they are using and if they are using PL tones. I've noticed a lot of drive thru places use standard carrier access and radios/headets are on different channels, so if you do the wideband modification, you will be able to transmit at 5 watts (more than enough), all the way up to 470 mHz.

Other ways of finding drive thru/retail store frequencies:

If you have a general idea of what frequency range your target is operating in, you can just do a search on your police scanner and it will eventually lock on to any nearby transmissions. This is tedious but it does work. Another similar, but less aggravating way is using the close call function on your scanner (if it has one) to locate any nearby signals.

The third option is the best but the most expensive, and that is to go out and buy a handheld frequency counter. Gigaparts has a handheld MFJ one for 120$. All you do is go near an employee talking on a headset or radio and when they key up, your frequency counter will display what frequency they are using. These are VERY handy.

I think the VX-8DR requires removing a diode or a jumper, and that is easy shit. I did this to my THF6A years ago and with your Tone decode function, you can also find out what PL tones stores are using :)

Good Luck!

Just type in Yaesu VX-8DR Mods and it will come up.

Best Regards,

Mister Skin

Oh, and by the way...

I was just looking online at pocket Frequency counters, and I noticed that there are 2 out there that are made in China and are dirt cheap: The Yaege FC-1 does 10 hz all the way up to 2.6 Ghz and is around 50 bucks. The GY-560 Freq counter goes for 39.95, and you might find it for less on eBay somewhere.

If you are going to be a true radio hax0r, you need one of these!

My Radio Shack scanner has a thing called "signal stalker" that works a lot like a frequency counter.  When it detects a nearby transmission, it pulls up that frequency and you can save it.  It's probably not as powerful as a real frequency counter, but it works well enough for me to get all the frequencies in a Target or Walmart.

The last time we messed with drive-thru frequencies (2 or 3 years ago), we found that a lot of fast food places were switching to 900MHz, which our radio wasn't able to transmit on.

When I have trouble locating a frequency for a place that I really want to do something evil at, I'll call up the business and try to get them to just tell me.  Tell them you're with the corporate office or the FCC and that, for whatever reason, you need to know what kind of radio they're using.  Get the model number and if you're lucky, the frequencies will be stamped on there someplace.  With the model number of the radio, you can Google it and find the frequency range that it's capable of so you'll know where to scan.

Dear K.

Too bad you didn't read Mitnick's book just a little closer or you'd realize the one thing you said that gives you away as in impostor.

Too funny...  :-)
Jesus Fucking Christ! Are you an idiot or just trying to be funny?

For some reason, it always slips my mind to try and social engineer any model numbers off employees. Since I carry an HT with my in backpack at all times, I just figure I can locate the frequency that way...

And RBCP, there are ways of transmitting on 900 mHz to fuck with drive thru users using that spectrum. 2 examples that I can think of are:

1: The 33cm amateur band is up there. This goes from 902-928 mHz in the US and Canada and is also used by ISM (industrial, scientific, and medical) devices as well as unlicensed users using very low power (your drive thru headsets/base units). You can either buy a homebrew 900 mHz radio off a ham (one that he built himself) or:

2: Buy an Alinco model DJ-G29T dualbanded HT and then do a wideband mod to it. I haven't done a whole lot of research on this radio since it is still fairly new, but I am sure that one will pop up somewhere on mods.dk or a related site soon. They run about 320$, so that is basically how much one of the triband Yaesus cost if you get one cheap.

Good luck!
