Private Domain Registration
« on: June 10, 2011, 05:13:11 AM »
Anyone know of any good, cheap companies for anonymous/private registration of domain names? PRQ charges $30, Godaddy/Domains By Proxy charges $10/year(in addition to the normal fee).. haven't looked anywhere else yet.

Also looks like Domains By Proxy is not so anonymous..

Quote
Domains by Proxy does not offer true anonymity. In most countries they are legally obliged to collect personal information from domain owners. They also require little persuasion to release domain owners' contact information, in some cases requiring only a phone request, certified letter to the domain owner, or a cease and desist letter.

Although I'm not particularly concerned with being fully anonymous- I just don't want my personal info available to anyone who looks up the whois. I guess I could just enter all fake information, like I've done in the past.

I'm also interested in any really cheap domain registration options, anonymous or not.

I am still interested to hear of any other options anyone may know of. Particularly any others that may offer actual anonymous registration, since it appears all of these will provide your info if requested by phone or letter.

Can't you just give fake info?  A fake name and address and maybe a Google Voice phone number.  A PO box of yours with a fake name maybe.

I have done that in the past with Godaddy, with completely ridiculous and obviously fake info, and they never had a problem with it. The billing info would still have to be valid though. I guess there isn't any getting around that unless doing a more expensive, truely anonymous option like PRQ.

i do not see why the billing would have to be accurate if using a prepaid credit card..

I may give that a shot..would have to find a company that accepts prepaid cards. The last time I registered a domain with Godaddy, they required a photocopy of my driver's license, along with billing info.

I've never had to register another domain name since then, so haven't done it through any other companies, although I've used other hosts

I'll probably give that namecheap site a shot, using a prepaid card/fake info and see if they accept it

A lot of hosting companies, Godaddy included, let you pay with PayPal.  So set up an anonymous email address, register it with PayPal, then pay with that.  You could pay for a year and then delete the email account.

I have dreamhost and adore it. So far it's legitimately the best hosting I've used so far.
