Episode #3 - Deaf Relay Operators

This episode features my new co-host Mary, a relay operator. It also features songs, skits, messages, commentary, commercials and raps all performed by deaf relay operators. It's approximately 17 minutes long and the download is 15,597 kb. Click here to listen to it.

Most of the relay voicemail messages played are more than 10 years old. The message involving the terrorist blowing up a commuter airline, done in 1994, was left on my own voicemail by myself while hanging out in the Portland, Oregon airport. "Mahmoad" was my roommate's name. Other messages were left on my home answering machine by PLA readers that I don't know. Thanks to RTF who made the Shakesphere promo for us a couple years ago.

Oooh, nostalgia.

The prank call of the two relay operators on the voicebridge, I participated in that. I was typing the text for the more feminine operator, the one who finished with "I changed my mind, fuck you I hate you die." The other operator, the one that said "Is that the only relay operator I hear, I hope I hope I hope," etc, was puppeteered by Visual Assassin.

So, Did you record sound clips from relay calls, or were you going live when you recorded? It seems a little fast paced for the 7 word per minute relay opperators.

I wrote a script for the show, then called up the relay operator and made her say all her lines.  Then dubbed hers in with mine.  That relay operator ruled - she would screw up a line, but then repeat it just so it would sound better.  She was a pro.  I should have her on again sometime.

This episode made me very happy, I used to use TTY from public computers every day when I didnt have a cell phone to contact people when I wasn't at my house.. Showing people this episode has saved me alot of time explaining this service to people and in easing their fears about using it for even relatively legit coversations.

I hate 'me too' posts, but mofo beat me to it - the opening song was awesome. And yes, Mary was a wonderful co-host. If that Titanic bit hadn't sucked so much, Episode 3 would have been my all-time favorite, hands down.
