Windows Media player doing something that I don't like

I watch a lot of movies/TV shows that are stored on my computer, which output to the TV.  Lately, I've been dealing with a terrible lag problem.  Today I noticed that it was because my hard drive was busy doing something, though the only thing running was Windows Media Player.  I tried to close Windows Media Player and a box popped up asking me if I'm sure I want to close it, because it's in the middle of converting files for me.

What the hell is it converting??

I did Google searches on the phrase and found nothing.  I looked at all the options and the best I could find was a thing that asked if I wanted Media Player to fill in the missing tags on my mp3s.  I unchecked that box.  I've heard horror stories before about certain media players converting entire mp3 collections to WMAs without permission but I don't think I've ever heard of Windows Media Player doing this.  And my mp3 collection seems to be fine.

There sure was a lot of hard drive activity, though, and it was lasting for a long time.  Could that be just from searching for mp3 tags?

I've started using Winamp to play movies, which solves the problem.  But I sure would like to know what Media Player was doing.

You could see if your hard drive's free space keeps getting lower to determine if WMP is actually making new files.  Do you automatically update media information from the web or something?

You could not use Windows media... Also check your processes to see if there is a corupted one that steals all of your CPU. This happens to my pc with a windows process called "Cisvc.exe"

You don't want to kill that process, it's a daemon that monitors memory usage of the Content Index Service.

Well my daemon is entirely  "Raped" It will start to use 99% of my cpu on windows, making it useless untill you kill the process, and then it seems fine until the next restart

You may then have to see if there is some other program interfacing with that process causing the trouble.

I wouldn't put this pass Microsoft for something like this although it sounds odd.  It's probably Windows Media Player automatically modifying your mp3s or whatever files you use with it to classify its usage.  Try going to the Library Tab and deselecting updates from the internet.
