Help new users with old thread resurrection
« on: September 09, 2007, 11:00:31 AM »
New users uneccessarily digging up old threads seems to be pretty common around here. Why not adjust the existing warning message (pic attached)? Shortening the time threshold and changing the message may prevent some of this behavior:

WARNING: This topic has not been posted in for 90 days.
Please don't reply to this thread unless you're going to add something truly extraordinary.

Just a suggestion...

'Cause that's not going to stop them. Nothing can be foolproof because fools are far too ingenious.

Next time I'll make a more conservative suggestion instead of announcing that I've found the foolproof solution that's always going to stop them. Perhaps I'll title it "Help new users..." and specify that it "may prevent some of this behavior". Thanks for your input.

You were clear to me.  Your suggestion can be easily implemented in less than 30 seconds as the time before topic is warned as old is a basic administrative function within SMF.

I never knew the forums told people that threads were old.  I'll have to look into that soon.  Maybe I can create different messages for threads that are 3/6/12 months old.  Right now, newbs get a message at the top of their screen, warning them to thoroughly read all the rules and the introduction thread.  I think that helps most people not do dumb things.  But there's always those few.
