Redbox DVD Prank
« on: January 04, 2008, 06:43:58 PM »
So it seems there's these DVD vending machines around everywhere now.  Outside of McDonald's, Wal-Greens, the local supermarket these big Redbox vending machines await you to rent a movie for a dollar.  I googled around and found some codes to get free movie rentals from Redbox.  Free sounds like the right price to me so I rented a couple.  Looking at the DVD, there is a sticker they put right around the hole in the centre.  The sticker has some numbers printed on it and two 2D barcodes.  Aha, so that's how they can tell when you go to return the DVD that you didn't stick Spin Doctor's Kryptonite CD in there instead of the movie.  So what's to stop me from putting the sticker on another DVD?  It's stuck on pretty damn good, and it looks like I'm ripping it rather than getting it off smoothly.  I suppose I could steam it off with moderately better success but I think the best course of action would be to photocopy it onto some label paper or regular paper and tape it on.  Now the thing, whether you get the movie for free for the night or not, requires you to swipe your credit or debit card and it puts a $1 authorization on it.  After doing my Christmas shopping, half the things I got rebates for come  to you as these stupid prepaid Visa gift cards.  So I can use up the bulk of it filling my tank full of gas and strategically leave $1 on the card.  Now I can use that to get movies anonymously so when they find out their Redbox has been stuffed full of DVD's they weren't expecting they won't be able to come find me.

Here's where I need your help.  I can rent a boatload of popular new release movies that I know other people will rent in short order and replace them with DVD's of my own creation and expect random unsuspecting movie renters will end up getting it and watching it.  What should I burn for them to see?  Hello.jpg comes to mind, along with the contents of a PLA media CD.  What would you guys suggest?

It's always hilarious to replace childrens movies with hard core porn.

Have you tried using your prepaid card on it yet?  I had this idea a couple years ago of using a prepaid card to get free gas, since pay at the pumps authorize the card for $1.00 and then charge the full amount a couple days later.  But the pumps ended up being smarter than me - they knew better than to take a prepaid card.  Hope the red box machines aren't the same.

If you feel like putting time into it, you could copy the movie and put it on the blank disc that you return.  But you could interrupt the movie every 15 minutes with your own political messages and commercials.  Or you could replace scenes with scenes that you act out.  See if you can make better scenes than the original!

Oh I know!  Ever seen those Lego videos on YouTube where bored Lego enthusiasts re-create entire movies from Legos?  Replace, for example, The Matrix and replace it with the 10 minute Lego version of The Matrix.  Or at least the recreated scenes.

If you go the hardcore porn route you'll need something that jumps into action right away. You also don't need a full length porn because it's not like they're going to watch it. Plus you can save time transcoding if you use a short clip. There's lots of beastiality movies at pornbay.org. Or find some facial compilation. Don't leave fingerprints

For shock value put some Tubgirl on the disc. Download a video called 2 Girls and 1 cup and put in the middle of the movie. From what I hear it's more gross than tubgirl and goatse.

Insert some scenes from Faces of Death or Faces of Gore.

Subliminal messages can be fun. Something like:

-Drink more beer
-This movie sucks
-ibaibaibaiba

Have Fun!!

You should probably get a sticker to put on the Cd, but it doesn't necessarily have to be the actually cd cover, you could probably just get a red sticker that says red box and the title. I would put coin tones on it for added lulz

If it's a movie with a twist you could insert a clip that ruins the surprise of the movie. Insert a clip that says "STACY THE WAITRESS KILLED HIM AND IS FRAMING BOB. YOU MAY AS WELL JUST STOP WATCHING."

Or cut the last third of the movie and have it go right to credits so it ends at a bizarre moment. This one is very low effort, it might even save you some time if you cut a double-layer movie down to 4.4 gigs so you don't need to compress.
