Yaesu question
« on: June 05, 2008, 01:46:04 PM »
First, let me give props to the author of the 6.5536 in a toaster. Still have a couple of those around from 1995. That being said, I'm much better with phones than radios. I live in a hurricane prone zone and have been considering a radio. I figure it also might also be fun to mess with the drive thru. I've seen these radios from 120.00 for a vx-150, or 170.00 modded, then the vx1, 3, 5, and 7. Simply put, I see the obvious of several including additional bands and wattage, but am simply unfamiliar with many of the other terms. Are the models below vx5 simply incapable of drive thru fun, or just inappropriate?

First of all, these radios weren't built with the intention of pranking drive thrus. The other features really don't matter to the prankster. If it puts out 5 watts, does pl tone encode/decode and operates on the correct frequencies you're fine.

Besides, the waterproofing is for when you have to climb up a hill in 8 feet of snow to reach the local rag chew repeater that blew a fuse again even though you told those fuckers that the fuse they used wasn't the proper rating and they tell you to STFU because your only 20 y/o so what would you know, and i  tell them that they're going to die soon anyway and I'll be in charge of the fucking tech crew anyway you old motherfuckers you're just mad because i got New Ham of the Year award and your daddies didn't love you enough!

Wow, people will pay an extra $50 for a radio that had solder removed from a couple of pads?  I'm in the wrong business...

Does the 7r do any sort of tone decoding? or would I still need to lug a scanner to find out the transmit code?

Not only does it PL & DCS tone decode, but it can scan through all the PL/DCS tones as well.  Problem with the scan is that it's kind of slow and wrt drive thru's, the handsets rarely transmit long enough for it to scan through enough of the codes to get a lock.  Once they unkey it keeps scanning.  It's easier to just scan through them manually with the decode on so you can stop when they stop transmitting and continue going through the tones sequentially when they resume transmitting.
