You completely misinterpreted the sarcasm used there.

RBCP wasn't trying to imply that you were lying when you said that it was "your friend" who needed help.
He put quotation marks around "your friend" because that's the grammatically correct thing to do when directly quoting somebody.

Ergo, the joke wasn't about the "your friend" part, but instead about the "common sense" part.
You see, his advice to you was to quit answering unknown calls if you want to avoid prankers.

#1 Never ever address Arbie by his name
#2 Never ever make eye contact with Arbie
#3 Never ever speak to Arbie unless spoken to first by Arbie or are invited to speak to Arbie by one of his representatives.

For now you are a lowly infidel but if you learn the 3 cardinal rules then learn to love them and live them , maybe one day you will be included with the PLA elite that will be invited to join Arbie in a plastic cup of aresenic laced kool aid.
