Ubuntu Qestions: WeakNet Linux Specifc, I guess
« on: January 03, 2009, 01:44:35 AM »
I installed WNLA on a partition tonight and I just had a couple of questions about problems I'm having. One is that whenever I enable the driver for my NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE Graphics card and reboot it flashes what appear to be errors on the screen and then forces me to boot into the lowest graphics quality. And every time I set the resolution to 1680x1050 I end up with everything completely off screen because it, for some reason, doesn't all fit on my 22" monitor. I can use this resolution fine in Vista and had it working before in my wubi installed version of Ubuntu 8.1. To get it working in 8.1 though I had to set it to the resolution then open and close alien-arena for it to display properly. My video card was working in 8.1 as well.

Also, I've searched Synaptic over and over but I can't find a virtual desktop manager. I remember seeing a screen shot of a really cool one here on the forums before but I can't find the post anywhere. I think it might even have been by you. It was a cube that you could zoom out and spin around to change desktops. Suggestions?

This?

I installed the manager using the terminal, but this should probably work as well.

As for your graphic problem, I don't know. I wasn't able to get 8.10 to install on my laptop correctly (it kept hanging, ran fine on my desktop though, but I never installed it there), so I'm using 8.04 instead. I've used envy before when I had trouble with my graphics driver, but that was over a year ago on an old version and haven't used it since.

I also can't get java to work in Firefox. So that means no RuneScape unless I boot up in windows.

Fuck you. I like RuneScape. If you don't like it then don't play it and stay the fuck out of threads I mention it in.

I tried installing java with wine (Which is what I used to get Opera working.) but it didn't work out well for me.

I don't know, works fine for me. Maybe you should take your computer back to where you purchased it for a refund. If they bitch about it, see if they'll at least give you store credit.

what's listed in your about:plugins ?

hi, WNLA is really meant to be a live cd, BUT, since it is built from Ubuntu 8.04, you can find support for NVIDIA hardware from their support forums:

The only support I can give is for security, security tools, and code that I have created.  The people who were involved with the project fell off of the face of the earth and dont give a shit.  I am stuck, alone, giveing help to those whom need it as best as i can.  now WeakNet Labs is 2 people, Tully and Me.

here's a link to some help with nvidia:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia

Gnome has special effect built in, but not compiz you will have to install compz-gnome compiz-core compiz-dev compiz-plugins etc with synaptic i believe:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4876658#post4876658

you can also search synaptic for java plugins for Firefox as well:

apt-cache search java | grep -i plugin

sorry for being to overwhelmed to help more. WNLA 2 is going to require MORE support than v1 too, so im debating on whether or not i should even release it.

actually, i forgot to mention i had an nvidia resolution problem with REAL debian, and i fixed it by selecting every resolution possible in reconfiguring an Nvidia specific package, like nvidia-xconfig er something like that, try:\

dpkg-reconfigure <nvidia package here>

(It was an AGP card, Ubuntu is awesome at finding PCI card drivers)
search synaptic for nvidia things you have installed and try that command on them, it will look similar to configuring xorg-xserver

:)

Off topic: I'd be more than willing to help. Only problem is I don't know of any information that would make anything worth while.

Yaaaaaaaaay Weaknet.
Booooooooo Everyone else.

Hey Nod, you probably need to install sun-java6 in synaptic

Trev, I would be happy to help with a non-live version that is intended for the desktop of tomorrow.

I really haven't been active with WeakNet at all.

But providing support for it is something I can do. I have become quite good at solving random things in Ubuntu since I have had to help all my friends and family that I force Linux upon. More importantly, I know how to use Google.

Just let me know where I can find all these needy WeakNet users, and I'll help them out.

thanks guys, Tully talked me into releasing 2.0, So i set a due date for Feb 5th.  I will send another broadcast email to people with WeakNetLabs.com email addresses, and whomever doesn't respond I'll release the email accounts.. That way I can kinda of start over.  Before WNLAv1 went to Softpedia servers I had over 7k downloads, so my godaddy rent went up.
I really need to work on how to integrate the GNU license into the distro as a whole.

was that LordNod i was talking to on the phone last night?? I responded to your comments on WeakNetLabs.com/Linux, and i posted here before speaking to whoever that was.  Skype is incredibly easy to install even from the Live CD, you just go to their website, dl the version for Ubuntu, and double click on the desktop Icon, then put in your sudo password and go through the 2 or 3 prompts, done.  The new application will be in "Applications->Internet->Skype"

And even with a sexy icon!

It was me on the phone! I was more interested having skype and skype4py pre-installed for the purpose of WarDialing than anything else.

For now I've decided to go back to 8.1 until I get to a point where I know what the fuck I'm doing. The main reason is that I couldn't get the video card working and I just CAN NOT work in the tiny resolution I was having to use. Maybe when I know more about fixing things I'll shrink my drive some more and give WNLA another try as an installed OS. In the mean time I'll use 8.1 and wait to get my wifi card so I can use the liveCD of WNLA to h4x the neighbors interbuttts.
I HATE the bridge.
