DVD Ripper/Transcoders
« on: May 26, 2009, 09:57:37 AM »
I'd been using DVD Decrypter and Gordian Knot under Windows for the past few years to back up my legally purchased dvds to my hard drive using the avi (xvid, ac-3) container with the quality settings set to 100%. I've using Ubuntu quite a bit recently and stumbled upon Handbrake for linux and noticed using its film preset, mkv (H.264, ac-3) container, the compression artifacts in the dark scenes were much less evident, while the file sizes were about the same. I'll likely be using this from here on out. I'm just curious what other people use or know of anything better.

I keep hearing about Handbrake. I might have to check it out.

Right now, I am using mencoder. It gets usually gets the job done, but it has no nice GUI or anything.

It looks like Handbrake just makes H.264 files. Is that right?
