I've been reading this page on and off for almost ten years now; and perhaps it's been discussed before but I missed it, so I'm asking now;

Comcast phones.  What's up with that? 

I just recently started getting old and purchased a house, and I'm considering getting a landline-  'ma bell' is insane with their pricing, comcast isn't (for the first 12 months, and another 24 after my roomates put it in their name).  Is there anything in particular that I should know about concerning the 'digital voice,' plan?  How evil is it?  Is it really evil, or equally as evil as a normal landline through ameritech or what have you?

I'd say that the cable companies are on the same level of evilness as the phone companies.  And the quality of calls is slightly better, especially for recordings.  If it's cheaper, then go for it.

That's part of what I was thinking (recording quality).  I wasn't sure if it was better or worse, and in retrospect, that's probably the question I should have initially asked. 

Anyway, right now we've been getting some amazing results merging some of the excess pro-audio stuff we have at the house with skype.  So I'm questioning if the additional phone is even really worth getting at all until skype starts charging...  by the way, an alesis ineko is a real simple and great effects unit that works particularly well for creating an 'andre the giant' type voice.  The 'drum room' reverb setting works exceptionally well at mimicing a wal-mart bathroom.

The truth is that I had cable phone service in New York, and I didn't find any difference in quality or service compared to other phone companies.  It wasn't comcast though, so I can't speak to the company itself.
